Thankfully, I see no logical reason why one would want to play music on a console, since playing music ruins the music of whatever game your playing (although if your playing Dynasty Warriors, I can understand). And as someone who values music very highly due to its importance to actual immersion (not the bullshit thing they call immersion) and emotional impact of scenes, it seems silly to me.
The number of games that have any actual immersive value in their music is relatively small.

Personally, I like being able to use custom soundtracks in sandbox games where you spend a lot of time in vehicles. Play them through the radio and all. I like GTA V's song selection, but radio stations are pretty limited on songs. Hell, Saionts Row 3 at least had a "mix tape" option, but I'd prefer to have access to my own tracks.

I mean, early games (from this gen) actually integrated them, as if to show off this cool new feature that was here to stay. By the end, it was mostly wrestling games (and I really will miss custom entrance themes).

I can think of plenty of logical reasons why you would want to play music on a console.

They might not fit your preferences, but that doesn't make them illogical.

Hmm...

This is just stupid. Especially the lack of ripping from Xbox One.

I guess there goes the custom soundtrack feature. And no its not the same as just playing music in the background. In wrestling and sports games you could change intro music and the such based on stadiums and players. And in GTA it was great looking at the time line and picking my faves from that era to play instead of the GTARadio.

Gamers: Jesus Sony, can you just focus on it playing games and not on the other frivolous shit?
Sony: Sure thing gamers, here you go.
Gamers: Oh my god Sony, what did you do?! Why can't I play music now?! Don't you know it's only the 4th or 5th device in my living room that can play music?!
Sony: ...
I'm not sure which part is stranger: the notion that Sony was so compliant or the notion that the two are somehow mutually exclusive. I mean, that's before you consider both companies are pushing their devices as multimedia units. Sony has used phrases like "nerve center of your living room" and others to indicate this is more than just a gaming console.

Focus on games my glorious and bountiful ass.

No mp3s per usb drive but... audio CDs?
Who even uses those anymore?
I haven't heard a CD hum in a drive for more than 3 minutes since... 2005?
Huh... It seems this news is more towards me than most... I still buy/use music CDs in my own home... On the go? Not really...

OT: Glad to see the Xbox One trying to gear a feature to the generation least likely to buy an Xbox One to begin with... Keep up the good work...
PS4... get you shins together... Music subscriptions are one thing, but to a service I rarely hear being used in the first place? Not you're just talking crazy...

Nonetheless, it's only a small little difference to the overall grand scheme of things... in terms of general backwards compatibility options...

HA! I get it... but, not right now... The consequences contained in a Xbox One or PS4 are skim, at best...

DNLA, music, what is this i dont even? whatever happened to DRM-free music using basic formats that even your 10 dollar digital TV adapter could play with no fuss? the technology is so basic you got opensource players that require no knowledge to run now.

It seems that i was right, Consoles this new gen will be PCs, except without any PC features created since 2000.

Err PS4 does not have an always online requirement and never did. The day 1 patch is optional, you can go home, turn the system on and play games if you so desire. What the patch does is add the online features (which you have to be online to use funny enough...) and activate the movie playback. That's far different from xbox One not working offline at all without the day one patch.
Ahh my mistake, a lot of people were talkng about the day one update as if it was confirmed to be covering up/ removing DRM (including on Escapist) and I had assumed there was a basis to this, didn't realise it had been confirmed to be false.

Either way between the features that require a day 1 update and some very basic features that have outright been ignored (e.g. mp3 compatibility) the PS4 is really no more valid or interesting an option to me than the XBone any more.
