Microsoft's Harrison: It's Not The Gigaflops, It's The Games

While I do agree that the games and content matter more than the 'gigaflops' and the 'terraflops', I feel like he's only said this because of the overwhelming popularity of the PlayStation 4 compared to the Xbox One. "Clearly we have better games" doesn't really matter as it's subjective. People can make their own decisions about the content, guy.

But seriously, "it's the games" from the guys who keep forgetting to market their games. And when they do, Titanfall is all that comes up.
Which is available on PC and is a "Free to Play" via EA.

Yeah, I'm not biting. Launch is just around the corner; what Microsoft has now is most definitely going to be the launch product. There's no way they can change stuff now.
Also, why are Devs working with awful, beta versions? Shouldn't you want them to work with, you know, what the consumers are going to have?

Ugh. This is just more reason why you should never ever buy a console at launch, especially nowadays. They are usually a glitchy, patch-filled mess.

Yeah, content is everything. PS4 beats you on that front, too.

Ryse is boring and generic.

Titanfall is available for PC, too, and just looks like a CoD clone with jetpacks & mechs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sony's execs don't seem to be saying a lot in regards to this stuff. It seems every week some MS exec has spoken out about something, and then totally goofed it and come off as a douche.

It's like a playground fight, and MS is the kid who hits themselves in the face every time they swing. And Sony are just stood there, waiting for something real to come their way.

Wait. How can they possibly improve the Xbox One's capabilities at this point? They launch in just under two months. They have to have a few million systems built at this point. Are they going to delay the launch, and effectively concede the market, to upgrade the system's CPU and GPU?

I doubt that can be done with a Day One patch (being hardware). Since that's what they are doing to fix the other huge screw up that was giving the middle finger to consumers. And since they apparently couldn't fix that in the roughly six months they had when that was announced, I'm finding that claim to be bullshit. And I don't think the magically mystery cloud is something to brag about. Because, first, no one really knows what it will do, and, second, Sony has that, too, but isn't acting like it a panacea for everything.
Software can make a huge difference in how hardware runs. If you've ever gamed on PC, you'll be very familiar with the difference updated drivers can make on the performance of you rig. Also overclocking can be done and that significantly boosts performance at the cost of creating more heat. If this console is actually well ventilated(unlikely, console cases are generally too small to have good airflow) then they could boost the performance without actually changing any of the hardware.

I'm confused, he's talking to developers here, yes? The power of the console is absolutely relevant to them and what they can do, and they don't care as much who has the "best" games since these are the people making the games.

I don't demand that a console have the most powerful hardware of all, but I don't think Xbox One is winning the games department either. What they claim are the best games amount to little more than Halo, Forza, and Ryse, none of which I have any interest in. Granted PS4 doesn't have much in the exclusive's department apart from Infamous, but 1 beats 0.

In his defence, it is nice to hear Microsoft finally giving some consideration to the notion that a gaming console is about games and not TV or sports.

I know it's a real term but I always giggle when I read gigaflops. Also, when is this thing shipping? Why are they still working on it at this point?

I agree completely: graphics and all that tech does not matter to me. I care about games!

So, uh...what games, exactly, are you coming out with Microsoft? Or for that matter, Sony? Honestly, I haven't seen any games for either party that have made me go, "Oh SNAP! I'm going to need a (insert console name here) to play that!" At least Sony is advertising games though. If I recall, the Escapist did an article a bit ago about how the latest Xbox One commercial featured zero video game references and toted it as a home entertainment center. Sending the wrong message if you ask me.

Bahahahahahahahahahaha! Sorry, I just... hahahahahaha!

"We can increase CPU and GPU capability on Xbox One," says Harrison, "so I think it's impossible to draw any conclusions from that based on pre-launch unfinished hardware and unfinished operating systems."
They're releasing in less than two months and he's saying the CPU and GPU specs, as well as the operating system aren't finished and finalized? Is this some sort of joke? Either he's lying to give people false hope or he's admitting that they're totally incompetent.
Glad I wasn't the only one to start laughing at the best games joke........ wait their serious ^_-

I concur.
Does that mean they'll pull their heads out of their asses and make the thing backwards compatible?
Because that's something someone saying "it's about the game library" would want to do when thinking about ways to expand it quickly and safely!

It seems to MS just lacks proper leadership. They don't have fixed marketing scheme and don't know how to sell their products plus they greatly underestimated intelligence of their consumers, thinking they could get away with online checks every 24h and that crappy camera watching your every move and transferring all that data to NSA ;)
Kinda makes you miss Bill Gates, dunnit? I mean the guy could sell Windows even when it BSODs right there during his live demo. Back when they were out-and-out villains in the 90's, Microsoft still moved product faster than anyone else.

When most of the big titles will be on both platforms then yes, it is about gigaflops.

All about the Pentiums!

... If you keep relying on overclocking to higher degrees, you'll be courting the RROD again.

Not really in your best interest Microsoft.

Yes, games are the important thing. So why dont you have any games that are worth playing?

This. But beware there will be an army of console people calling us elitists now. how dare we admit that PC is better than anything.

Does the Xbox One have a doubtful future? Yeah. Can it change? YES. Could the PS4 all of a sudden get the equivalent of the RRoD? Definitely. The obvious moral here is, wait before you doom something to oblivion.
Personally, I enjoy a good witch hunt, especially a well deserved one. Even if Xbox One was an amazing console with the best console games on it I wouldn't buy it, on principle. The amount of news, the amount of problems, the amount of BS spouted out from M$ and the dismissive nasty nature of their PRs is enough, along with their intended always-online goal for X1 and that miserable OS windows 8 makes them deserve the snarky derision they get from all corners of the globe.

Personally I would love to see the company go bankrupt in a few years time, but I'm not holding my breath. And this comes from someone who likes Bill Gates, admires his business acumen and humanitarian goals, loves windows 7, has never owned a Sony product and proudly owns and plays an xbox 360. Microsoft is the bigger smellier cousin of EA now. I think the world would be a better place if people treated businesses like they treat individuals (businesses legally are individuals...) If your 'friend' keeps trying to sell you a counterfeit watch with outright lies, farts in your direction and guffaws, and is pro-slavery then he wouldn't be my friend anymore.
