TF2- is a must buy if you like shooting stuff
or the orange box or the valve pack Omnomnom mentioned
My comp's hardly a powerhouse, 3gigs ram, 2.5gh dual core, basically non-existant graphics card and i can run tf2 and halflife2 fine.

aside from that steam has ALOT of really great <10$ games, but they usually aren't shooters.

Alright stupid question(and I know I will be crucified for it), but can I play shooters like TF2 and killing floor with a 360 controller? Im just used to a controller than a keyboard really, and I already have the software and the wireless receiver for the controller.
yeah you can but trust me unless you get used to the keyboard and mouse you will be constantly owned...
Also The Stalker Series is nice and cheap try them out... and Deus Ex it's my favorite game ever and it's only $5 but use the Shifter Mod [http://www.moddb.com/mods/shifter1] and HDTP [http://www.moddb.com/mods/project-hdtp] if the dated graphics bother you...

Edit: Buy the second Deus Ex only if it's on sale cause it's a fuggin joke compared to the first...

While your waiting for Team Fortress 2, join the TF2 PC group! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC]

Shameless plugs aside, I say go with the first F.E.A.R.

Just so the OP and this guys knows. The Steam version of Deus Ex is incompatible with mods. I don't know why they chose to take them out.

Every weekend. Steam offers so many deals I feel ashamed paying full price, patience is your friend. Too bad you didnt ask that question two weeks ago.

You might, depending if the game settings allow it... but that would make the game almost unplayable, where the slightest touch on the sticks would jerk your view around and make fine aiming completely impossible.

It's very worth while getting used to a keyboard+mouse for FPS games.

Don't buy Deus Ex, it has aged terribly. Please, please, don't listen to any nostalgic people stuck in the past and thinking this game at all holds up to modern shooters. It does some things well, and it deserves its place in history, but in terms of actual gameplay quality and intuitiveness compared to modern first-person games it basically pales in comparison.

Pick up Half-Life: Source, I know you said 'besides the Half-Life series' but this will play on pretty much any PC. You should post your system specs or something so we know what the limit is in terms of what we can recommend you :)
