Minecraft help

So I have been playing minecraft for a few days now on my friends account to see if it's something I might want to buy.(I know I'm late to the minecraft party) I tried today to start playing some of the mods for the game but cant seem to do it. So here is my question, am I unable to use the mods because I'm stupid (highly possible) or because I'm using my friends account?

to use a mod you need to download the game, have you downloaded the game?

To install most mods, you need to:

Open the minecraft jar with Winrar or similar.
Delete the META-INF folder
Insert the new .class files into the jar using Winrar or similar.
Close Winrar or similar, compressing the jar again.
Open Minecraft and play.

If the mod needs ModLoader, it's more complicated and I can't be bothered to look it up. Sorry.
