Well you see I have a problem. Let me just start with a little story of my experience so far.

I started off playing a week ago and knew a little bit about how to play. I heard you were supposed to punch trees and you would get wood out of it. I punched the same tree for about 15 minutes because I thought it just took longer with your bare hands is all. And here is the problem. No matter how much I punch the trees, nothing happens to it. It will not break. I punch cows, I get leather. I punch flowers, I get flowers? And so on and so forth. But I can't really even go anywhere with the game because I can't get the basic wood to do anything really. I've made multiple worlds and I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to uninstall it so I can install it again and see if it works, but I was wondering if someone had any ideas that could help me out.

I guess for discussion value... Have any of you come across anything in minecraft that will not let you play? Yes I understand that this game is in it's alpha release and is buggy, but not being able to even get wood is silly.

You have to hold down the mouse button, keep your reticule centered at the block of wood you need to collect, and hold down M1 (The Left Mouse button) and your character should keep punching it, after about 5-6 seconds it should break, leaving behind a collectible block of wood.

This site will also be your friend.

Are you punching different parts of the tree? You have to focus on one block only, or the others will instantly regenerate. You should be able to see the block you're punching at visibly crack little by little, but it shouldn't take more than five to seven seconds to get a block of wood.

And yea, as he said above, just hold down LMB. Don't click it repeatedly.
I made the same mistake when I first started, I would one hit flowers and punch the living daylights out of chickens but how do I get wood? OH I have to hold it.

Thirty minutes of my life, gone.

Maybe Notch will keep them from re-generating? I cannot express how frustrating it is to be mining cobalt when bam mouse slips and have to start all over.

Look up the crafting recipes, they will help you a lot. They are all on that Wiki Link I posted, under Recipes. I would suggest (if you are playing on the Normal Difficulty setting) to make some axes, spades, and pickaxes ASAP in order to go ahead and get some stone tools going, and finding coal quickly. Torches will keep zombies from spawning in your general area. Remember, they can still walk into the light, they just appear outside of it.

And thank you so much Gordo. You were a huge help and now I can finally start playing the game for what it is!
