I just bougth Minecraft to try Survival MP, and I just cant understand where to start, I searched some servers online but they all have this whitelist thing that doenst let me build anything, I understand why they have it but it just isnt user-frienly at all. For every server I have to do something diferent to be able to actually play in the server, in one of them I had to find a town and join it. What the hell is that supposed to mean? I talked to a guy there and he said to join Hord, but I never found it, it was just a huge mess and everyone there was talking to me like I knew the place from the back of my hand. I left the server, joined another one wich I needed to register at a website, after that I found out that most of them do that. Really? I have to go to websites that I dont even know to create accounts just to play the game online? Isnt there an easier way?

I still didnt managed to find a good place to hang around.

The game is still in Alpha, so it's hardly surprising it's a mess.

And the reason why you can't just build anywhere on most servers is that there has been and still is a big problem with griefers, people that go around and ruin other peoples stuff by dismantling it or lighting it on fire. In short, assholes. I'm in a private server hosted by my clan for my clan and no one else so I don't have any problems like this cause everyone in the clan knows and trusts each other. I guess if your not already part of a group, getting into one might take more of a commitment than the casual online player is willing to.

Anyway, good luck searching. I don't know any good servers cause I already have a closed one I play in, but keep searching and asking around =3. It's great fun when you find a good one.

I think at the moment Survival MP is more of a private community based thing. Like it's fairly easy to just set up your own server and tell some friends to join, or you can check if sites like this have any servers running.

It's to prevent griefing, which is a pretty big problem in Minecraft.
Exactly this. It's way too easy to rip someone's constructs (which they may easily have worked on for several hours over several days) to shreds in a matter of minutes, so they need some way to corral the trolls. The easiest way to make people behave is to take away their masquerade license: by forcing you to register, you gain a permanent identity for that server, making it much easier to track how much of a dick you have or haven't been.

It's not really all that troublesome--just find a server or a website that you like/might like, join up, and play. You only have to register once, so it's not too much of a hassle. Also, several sites you may already visit have Minecraft servers affiliated with them--Shamus Young's blog Twenty Sided has one, I believe that the Escapist has one... Whichever server you decide on, the hassle shouldn't be too terrible, and should only be troublesome the first time you enter a server.

Besides, it's an alpha build of the game, cut it a little slack.

The servers are owned by the players, so those rules are set by the different communities and not by Minecraft itself.

Either start your own server or obey the rules of the people who have done already.

I only play the multiplayer with my friends, you can discuss and plan what you can and can't do so that you wont run into any problems :)

The escapecraft server seemed alright. I'm not into the multiplayer though, it'sd all a bit messy. I'm much happier alone in the wilderness.

However if the server is small you can set things on fire while no one is on and no one will know it was you. The anti-troll rules only protect the server if someone in on it all the time. complicated wood house? say hello to fire! under water dome? break the glass! chest full of goodies? loot it!

its all pretty contrived. The security utterly does nothing during the dead hours.
Fair enough, but it's a security measure that works when people are around, and it's relatively non-invasive. It may not protect the server every moment of every day, bt it keeps the server clear of idiots most of the time with minimal hassle.

It?s anti griefing measures. It can be quite a problem so people take precautions and set up things like that to hopefully lessen the damage that can be done. Your best bet is to find a minecraft group/community and get involved in that. The Escapist has its own and it has different measures in place to help against griefers so you can jump right in and build. Although since its measures aren?t as evasive it can take damage during the quieter hours where there aren?t as many people around keeping an eye out for each other. Although in past people have helped each other rebuild and such when something has happend.
