Me and my mate were on xbox live and we decided to try and start up our own multiplayer lobby. After a LOOOOOOOOOOOOng wait i finally got my mates IP adress and i tried to join his world. After a little wait, it told me that connection had timed out. This isn't the first time that i couldn't join a multiplayer game. Here are the details:

.My freind has already whitelisted me
.I'm running minecraft on a laptop
.My freind has a fixed Ip adress
.I have never been able to join anyones multiplayer server due to the same message popping up.

Can anyone help at all?

No, we moved from my xbox to the computers

Minecraft isn't on xbox yet? That's probably your problem.

If you're doing it on computers that are getting their internet from different routers, that's probably where the problem lies. Portforwarding is basically opening up a few ports in your router to let the TCP/UDP traffic that minecraft needs get through. Most routers block everything incoming as it's a bit of a security risk. For minecraft you need to open up 25565. There's a link on the minepedia server setup page that's quite useful.

If that's not the issue (you can test it with various web-based services, some of which are linked to in the wiki) make sure that you have the external ip, not the ip of your laptop (or whoever's hosting). Failing that you could always just play LAN - my router is a pile of crap so it's what I do.
