Minecraft - On lanterns... (Update Discussion)

It appears that the legendarily unwelcome "lantern" part of the update hasn't actually been included. As of yet, I just finished loading the update, and the Biome effects were rather immediate to me. (Who knew I was living in a snowy area?)

Anyway, I'M very much so looking forward to exploring it further, and by the time many see this thread, chances are good YOU already will have.

Discussion: Now that you've toyed with the actual update, what are your thoughts?

I built a portal away from my base.
Explored a bit, walked back to the original portal...
Came out somewhere completely different.
Somehow there are now 2 portals in my world though I only ever built and/or travelled through 1.

Creepy man. Hellspwan all over the place. So whats the whole lantern thing about?

started over to try out biomes, spent the entire time exploring caves, which would of been there pre-update.

Biomes are really cool and all, but they make no difference to what happens when you're mining. I really want damage and enemies to work in Survival Multiplayer, though.

EDIT:

Is it true that once lanterns have been implemented torches run out of light? I don't like that idea much, I've put a lot of torches around the place.

Notch (Minecraft Developer) said that all torches that you have placed down before the update that adds lanterns (Which hasn't happened yet) will be replaced with lanterns.

So start spamming torches, because lanterns might cost more resources to make!

As of yet, it's looking like you'll never have to think about lanterns. Ever.

Played a little bit, it's pretty cool. Obviously there is nothing amazingly game changing but I liked the fishing, the biomes are pretty and the nether I'm yet to explore because I don't have any obsidian.
