MInecraft server

Ok, so I've been trying to set up a server for me and my friends to oplay the game on. So far what I've done is created te server and i can access it when i type in "localhost". I set the IP adress to something new, but when my friends tye in this they cant access the server. I read something about port fowarding on the Minecraft wiki. But this stuff really isnt my strong point. Any help?
