I've recently realised that the vast majority of my skins are bland and/or really generic - Army guy Jungle, Army guy Snow, USSS agent etc. etc.

Since then, I've come up with an idea to change my skin to something I've never seen on any server: a Discworld character called Moist Von Lipwig who wears a gold painted suit with a gold cap to go with it.

Unfortunately this would look silly if his military cap didn't have a brim.

Which I don't know how to do.

So my question to you is how do you get the 3D bits on a skin? I've seen many things, like gas masks, brims of hats and the side of a beret, but I still don't know how to do it.

On the image above, the section labeled "Hat" is the section of the skin that you can colour for the 3D bits on the head. "Top" is the top of the hat, "Right is the right side and so on. The image is taken from MC SkinEdit [http://freeminecraftskins.com/2010/10/skinedit-create-minecraft-skins-with-ease/], which might be a good program to use if you're not already using one.

It's great that you're making a Moist skin, I'd love to see it when you've finished =D

The connection to the server (or whatever) didn't work so I painted it in paint, but used that template to ensure I did it in the right place. Despite this, the skin won't show up with the hat brim on it. I'll try to post an image, but Imageshack isn't letting me access it atm.

He's got the suit from Making Money on, and it's the top hat from MM too. It should've been the Postmaster General's hat, but I decided to do the Master of the Mint clothes.

I opened the image you gave me in MC SkinEdit and removed some of the extra white around the head, and the brim started showing for me. The edited image is below:
