My computer crashed a few days ago and eveything was lost, luckily nothing major, but my Minecraft Saves were lost. To prevent this from happening again I'd like to be able to keep my saves backed up on a portable device like my 2GB USB. How would I save my files both on what ever computer I am using, and my USB simultaneously (if that's even possible) Would I be able to automatically acces my world when my USB is in teh computer, or would I have to import the save onto the hard drive everytime I wanted to play?

Also, where are the save files (I have a 2003 Windows XP Professional)

I don't know much about the backup, but if you download [a href="http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download"]Recuva[/a] (It's free - ignore the 'buy now' button), you may be able to recover the saves.

You can tell it to look for deleted files that were in a specific location (C:/Documents and Settings/[Username]/Application Data/.Minecraft/saves) and it might find them.

Well that helps for back ups, but anothe reason that i wanted the USB option was so that I could work on the same world from different computers.

Alright, by looking around I figured out how to transfer my save onto the USB, but what I'm now still wondering is if I copy the entire .minecraft file, will I be able to play directly from the USB, ithout copying it into my computer's .minecraft file as long as th USB remains in?

No, Minecraft can only read saves from your App Data directory.

If it helps, Notch said once that he'd like to make it possible to change it at some point in the future...

Just keep your copy of Minecraft ON the USB drive. Minecraft doesn't (to my knowledge) create separate save files.

Crisis averted.
