While this is all well and good, I'd like to know if they've sorted out the performance issues that came about in the 1.6 update. I don't know if it's the launcher or some spastic code, but whatever it was, I could barely stay above 30 FPS on the default texture pack and far render distance where I would reliably stay above 60 with a 32x32 texture pack and double far render distance. It really put me off upgrading.

The updated world generator will make more realistic environments with fewer oceans.
...If they were going for realism, wouldn't they be aiming for 70% ocean coverage? Or is this "realism" in the same way that chest-high-wallapalooza regenerating-health-em-up browngray shooters are "realistic?"

Sounds good. Just hope I'll be able to play the game. Haven't been able to start it in months due to some weird bug that no one has found a fix for(at least Google hasn't been helping).
Got a new PC now however, so it might work again!

Holy crap! I knew I couldn't be the only one who was having performance issues post-1.6! My PC used to be able to run Minecraft at the highest settings just fine for the most part, but ever since the new launcher, my framerate can BARELY stay above 15 FPS at these settings.

Goddamn it. I hate it when they do this. Every time they do I have to start a new main world because it makes exploring in my old worlds weird because when I hit new terrain seams form.

All things aside, I guess I'm looking forward to it, after most updates usually add pretty cool stuff so there should be a lot to look forward too.

Actually I haven't played Minecraft in awhile so this might give me a reason to start it back up again.

I don't like this.
For one, every time they update world gen, whatever server I'm playing on changes map so the world gen doesn't screw up that map.
Additionally, I really miss the old maps. I don't care so much about Biomes being logically placed, or not having water everywhere [ATM I'm actually struggling to find water in my maps...], I cared about the cool places I could find. The half-mountains. Floating islands. Cliffs with cool shapes. That's what made exploring in Minecraft fun. The new worlds are just flat in comparison. Things look, for the most part, normal. There needs to be an "Old world Generation" option.
Hell, maybe there is but I haven't checked on in so long I don't know.

Also, this:

Instead of reducing ocean size, maybe they should make the oceans more interesting!

Underwater biomes, creatures, caves, sunken ships, treasures, big titted mermaids, and Cthulhu!

Will there be less huge ass cave systems under every inch of the map?

I'm sick of never having any secure area to build on because there is always a sprawling labyrinth of death right below my idyllic village or fantasy castle. I dunno, there's something a lot less friendly and accessible to the cave systems and frequency that you used to get, where you could build a dwarven fortress in the side of a mountain without accidentally intersecting a million dark caverns that you need to completely brick up or else you get the freaky 'dark space nearby' noise spammed at you or zombie groans/spider squelches etc.

I know it's a picky complaint to say minecraft has too many caves, but sometimes I just want a more solid land block to build on, not necessarily without caves, but less complex, more like original minecraft cave systems.
yeah, this was the most annoying part and i would actually use a cheat/mod to see whether there are underground dungeons and pick a spot where there are least of them.

And also i liked the oceans. they are supposed to be bing. the new biome map from a picture just feel like its going to be no oceans :(

Personally I liked the oceans, though every time I went though them it made me wish they'd let you construct more elaborate ships. I'm in awe of what they've done, but it seems that it wouldn't be that hard to make a constructed 'ship' as a collection of blocks something which can move together. Would love something which would let you move faster but then worry about hull draft hitting rocks on the shallows and beaching / destroying your boat.

Yeah that's a pretty good suggestion, but the minecraft engine just isn't designed for something of that. It wouldn't move naturally, it could only move in block units and directions, nothing in between. You could make it into entity, but then that would both cause a lot of lag from transferring so much metadata, and would run into collision problems(Haha..puns..or play on words) because you couldn't actually walk on it, much like how you can't actually walk on a ghast.
Also, big oceans are good oceans. I don't like puddles. I want to build Rapture. And that's still pretty fuckin' difficult in the current ocean sizes.
