Minecraft: What's the point?

No, no, this isn't a Minecraft hate thread; quite the opposite.

I love the game, but often when I play, I find myself thinking "why did I make that?"

For example, the other day I was watching Spirited Away, and I decided to make a large bathhouse on my server. Why? It isn't as if you can bathe in Minecraft! Yet I built rooms with ice baths, hot baths (with lava running), stone, clay, wood etc.

Another example. I built a large ampitheatre. Why? You can't put on plays in Minecraft!

So have you ever built something, and just wondered, why did I build that? What is the most "trivial" thing that you have built? And why do we build them?

But to me, Minecraft is a toy box. The reason you do anything in Minecraft is the same reason you ever made anything from Lego as a kid.

Prefer playing on hardcore multiplayer servers, where survival isn't just from monsters but from other people as well. On hardcore you also get banned for a day or two if you die, so you're always on your toes and don't really want to just go around starting fights with everyone.
Also people can put bounties on you etc.

Makes it much more fun trying to make defences that can out wit other people with redstone, or trying to hide some valuables where people won't find them.

Still no objective goal really, unless you want to become the richest or best PvPer or something, but it's like DayZ hasn't got a point, but it's a bloody fun game.

Well we build things because of a creative itch we get, but once that is scratched the game or rather toy has no more to offer.

It is rather sad Mojang decided to just cap Minecraft where it is, they could do so much more to make it meaningful, even with simple things like NPCs to hire (farmers, cooks, builders, blacksmiths, decorators, miners,...), just that would give you something to build and strive for, maybe make a whole city for them.
But alas we can't always get what we want.
