Minecraft won't update please help

So i have been looking forward to the upcomin updates as much as anyone but for some reason it won't update there are no slime beasts no map and i want to get my updates working in time for 1.7 please help.
i have tried force update

What version do you currently have?

EDIT : The version is shown at the top left of the main menu. The latest is 1.6.6

Open up the .minecraft folder, delete the bin and resource folders, run the client, and it will do a fresh install of 1.6.6
