Miniatures!

Those little things, often over- proportionality expensive and un assembled they are a staple of "geek culture". I have always been interested in the whole Warhammer scene although the price has put me off somewhat I have found painting them gives me a sense of satisfaction I rarely get anywhere else.

Does any body else collect miniatures, Warhammer or otherwise? Any painting tips? Any hilarious stories about getting a hormagaunt stuck to your hands with super glue?

Well, I'm thinking of getting a toy schnauzer, which is essentially a miniature miniature schnauzer. They come with realistic barking noises, too!
Does that count?

Spoiler: OK, this is mostly an excuse to post a picture of puppies.

I once was dragged into the local P&P shop in undergraduate, and I got a space marine stuck on my hat buckle.

I used to buy that board games, whats it called? I forget but it had all these warriors from all these diffrent times in miniatures that would fight, i used to buy the bigest set of these they had only to throw away the board making pieces in favor of the little people.
I had like 10,000 elves dwarves humans and droagons.

Well, I'm thinking of getting a toy schnauzer, which is essentially a miniature miniature schnauzer. They come with realistic barking noises, too!

It does it you have to paint it.

Been collecting 40K on and off since for about 15 years, as well as Warhammer and a few of the other stand-alone games (especially GorkaMorka and Warhammer Quest, they were awesome).

Aside form the odd games session, I tend to collect figures I like aesthetically to paint up, rather than collecting armies. The regular price hikes don't help matters either.

This seems to be my approach, they also release new rulebooks and army lists which somtimes can mean your hard works are rendered obsolete.

In 5 very big boxes in my closet. every once in a while i line them up in formation and have huge imaginary battles even thought im getting to old for those now.

OT: I sold off a huge number of these when I moved back to Illinois. I didn't collect them myself, but I used to DM, I guess you could say professionally because I was paid to do it. In any case, I had thousands of these little guys. They were cool, and I held painting workshops. I didn't paint, I just provided the miniatures, the paint and the brushes and such.

It was fun, but boy is it an expensive hobby!

TBH, I like to pose the 22 i've painted as well. Something about lording over ones achievements!

@Erana I think those folks in the shop just wanted to touch a girl. The rarity of one of your sex in most P&P stores is rare, well in the ones i've frequented anyway.

On Topic: I find painting so therapeutic and absorbing (despite leaving the odd trace of skin on my models here and there due to sticking myself to them). Its expensive but worth it for the end result when you have something to show off =D

No way, spend whatever amount of time getting everything setup and the game will beat you down in half that time. Once you start those power check runs of 1s and the beast are piling up in adjacent rooms it's over. We're still fighting encounter 1 when encounter 4 hasnt even been deployed yet due to all the squares being fill in adjacent rooms.

The worst is when you play a campaign. Oh look in between that dungeon and the next my character was whisked away to his death by a tornado, thanks dice.

All in all though I dont regret the purchase $60 for like 90 games workshop figs (even if they are plastic they are nicer then many others. I love the spiders). We never play it anymore but do use the dungeon tiles and figs in our weekly dnd game.

Its those moments where town events cause you to be incapacitated for two weeks, long enough for you to start needing to roll on the settlement disaster table, that stories and legends are made. As for the power thing, while rolling 1's is bad news, try having an Ogre in your party. They have to roll as well, and if he gets a 1 same time as the wizard, two encounters happened. My Ogre eventually lept to his death to end it all!
