Why is it that there are very few games with mirrors or with mirrors that work. Like I'll walk into a bathroom or bedroom with a mirror in it and nothing comes up! Are we all Vampires?! Or is it just laziness from game developers to make you a face!? What's your opinion?

It seems like a pointless feature to me. I'd rather game devs spend space on gameplay rather than silly graphics features like reflections in mirrors. Then again, I know some to tend to love the games that are all about impressive graphics. To each his/her own.

Probably laziness in terms of attention to detail. Deus Ex had reflections after all, and that game isn't the newest title out.

But perhaps as games get more advanced, creating reflections like that get more complicated. It's not important IMO anyway.

I'm guessing that having realistic reflections in surfaces all the time would kill the frame rate - even if you weren't looking at them they'd still have to be there, thus wasting graphics resources.

well,it's a very small detail that would cost a lot of time and money

combination of laziness and a wish for a lack of people yelling at them for taking so long to make a game.

I would only complain about this small feature if it was the ONLY thing missing from a game. To be honest, IMO little things like this do not matter much to me, unless it was part of a game mechanic that is used even once. Then it would get ripped to shreds by EVERYONE. But that;s not likely is it?

because most gmes are centered around you being in somekind of a immersive story, rather being able to look at yourself... F.E.A.R had the deatils of your own legs and feet, but you never came across any working mirrors :S

how would it cost a lot of time and money!? it's a simple detail that they put into water!!! If they can take away the ripple effect and make you a face its that simple!!!

I'm more intrigued by the fact that if you look down, you almost never have no legs.
^This. Games always get extra points from me when they have legs. Riddick gets like a billion extra points for being able to see your shoulders/legs/arms during different actions.

Some games will put a mirror or two in them. I remember Prey and Max Payne having mirrors. they weren't littered all over the place, but they were just cool to see.

Hitman: Blood Money had working mirrors....

I don't remember any other games that do though.

The Darkness had working mirrors, but to be honest, it's not something that I would rate a game by.

"Oh deary me, this game's mirrors don't work. It's gone down a star..."

Honestly, who really cares? It's only a mirror.

It isn't technically hard. You just create another room beyond the glass were all the geometry is reflected. The reason it is often avoided in first person games is that it means that you have to render the your avatar in real-time looking back at you and some developers would rather not have this bother as for the rest of the game you don't see yourself.

Cut-scenes tend to be pre-rendered, so the animation here doesn't have to be real-time.

I think that is probably the reason.

Mirrors aren't really important.
Unless it's a stealth game and you use a mirror hanging on the wall to see around a corner or something.
But in most games it seems pointless.

As others have said, it would cost a large amount of time and money for something most people won't even notice.
