Miyamoto is Stepping Down

I hope Miyamoto stepping down from management to a more personal directorial position will spawn some new IPs for Nintendo. I feel Miyamoto is a true auteur in the industry despite his assertion that he nothing of the sort. Who else creates an RTS about their own garden from the perspective of a tiny alien? Who else creates a game about a village of talking animals with no combat whatsoever based off of people's experiences with The Legend of Zelda? In fact, Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka spawned innumerable game genres in the mainstream media through Mario and Zelda alone. If Tezuka is bumped up to fill Miyamoto's position, I feel like Tezuka will continue to uphold Miyamoto's legacy as best he can.

Fun Fact: Miyamoto's birthday is November 16th. Tezuka's birthday is November 17th.

Miyamoto is Stepping Down

Legendary developer Shigeru Miyamoto is stepping down from his current management position at Nintendo, but staying within the company to work on smaller, more personal projects.

"Inside our office, I've been recently declaring, 'I'm going to retire, I'm going to retire,'" he told Wired.com. "I'm not saying that I'm going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position."

"What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself," he continued. "Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small."

But then I was happy again. I'll be looking forward to what he makes next.

...But we're still getting Pikmin 3, right? I mean, come on. How long have we been waiting for that and been teased that it's still on the way?

I find the idea of Miyamoto as an indie dev hilarious.

Well I don't know if I'd be as comfortable handing my creations off to others as he is.

Better to hand them off than to have them ripped away like some other developers have.

People: Nintendo and Miyamoto have made a lot of new games that are not Zelda and Mario. It is just that most people do not care about those games and they get ignored. It isn't Nintendo's fault you're ignorant.

Good to hear that Miyamoto is staying with the company. This year has been bad for developers leaving companies. The main ones I can think of are Inafune from Capcom and half of Team ICO or something like that. There are a few others, but I don't think I actually cared about them.

Well that's a bit of a shock. First I thought he was actually retiring, and I thought to myself "First Team Ico collapses, and now this!? What's happening!??!", but it's not so bad. At least he will still be working on games. I think I'll really enjoy seeing what he comes up with. He's been at the helm of series that have largely been the same for decades, so I will be eager to see what he can come up with when he has more freedom to innovate. But I just hope so much that this doesn't mean Zelda will be ruined...

Frankly, that's for the best for both Nintendo and the fans.
Nintendo is in dire need of fresh meat in management to actually arrive in the present. They are finally doing things right with the 3DS and its online capabilities (took them only six months) and I hope they dang sure learnt their lesson that you need games for a console to sell. GRAH.

In any case, Miyamoto, as awesome as he is, appears to be quite... conservative, at least when it comes to business. So letting him return to the field he's both best in and most comfortable with seems like the best idea Nintendo had in the recent time. I, for one, can't wait for him to come up with something that might very well turn into a franchise that'll live through the next 30 years.
