I am now imagining a Mafia game, in which you play gun-toting Mario and Luigi as prohibition-era mobsters.

The previous Mario Bros. title had Mario and Luigi knocking turtles over only by smashing platforms below them, but Miyamoto determined that it didn't make sense to be killed by touching a turtle shell with your feet. "We realized it made no sense that you could get killed in Mario Bros. when you jumped on a turtle's back," Miyamoto admitted.
that's the thing miyamoto thought didn't make sense? not the fact that turtles were evil to begin with?

a pretty cool article though, interesting to see how such an iconic game got made.
Have you ever met a snapping turtle? They can be surprisingly evil. That said, awesome article, thanks Tom!

Giana Sisters did that on the C64, worked well enough.
Since that was a computer game, it was made for the keyboard, so it would work.
I think you've never used a C64. That thing wasn't designed to have games use the keyboard, it didn't even have a full set of cursor keys (you had to use shift+down to move up and shift+right to move left) and as far as I know almost all games only allowed joystick input. The C64 was basically a gaming system with PC bits added to sell it to corporate management.

You're right, I've only played C64 on an emulator or Virtual Console, I thought since modern PC games use it, C64 used it too...my bad.
