So the finale of My little pony season 4 just ended, what are everyone who likes the series thoughts on the season as a whole?

Overall, I really enjoyed it, it had a few bad episodes but what season doesn't and it had a bunch of episodes I really enjoyed like Castle Mane-ia, Rarity Takes Manehattan, Pinkie Apple Pie and Filli Vanilli. Plus I really liked the final for it which tends not to happen for me, with the exception of the season 3 final.

Honestly I thought season 4 was a fantastic season (a huge improvement over season 3 but the less episode in that season was kind of the blame of it). It could be my favourite season so far.

I liked how the team/ writer were able to think outside of the box for the plot/ story due to exploring new chemistry on the least interaction among the casts (the Bats episode was the first time that we see an AJ/ Fluttershy episode) and they did a wonderful job on episode focusing on negative aspect of their elements (Applejack having to tell the hard truth in that Flim Flam episode and where Rainbow Dash loyality lie).

My favourite episode of season 4 got to be Pinkie Pride due to the awesome musical numbers overload (which is sad since I know we will never seen Cheese Sandich again or a similar musical number episode)!!!

Edit- My other favourites are Rarity Take Manehatten, Rainbow Falls, Filli Vanilli and Trade Ya.

Personally, I feel like Season 4 is the best season yet. And I say that as someone that thought that Season 2 was amazing.

Frankly, the ratio of bad episodes to good episodes has never been better. While there were certainly a few duds in there (Rainbow Falls, Daring Don't, Somepony to Watch Over Me, and ESPECIALLY Equestria Games), the good episodes were freaking amazing.

Power Ponies, Pinkie Pride, Testing Testing 1-2-3, Filli Vanilli, Flight to the Finish, Rarity Takes Manehatten, Pinkie Apple Pie, this season was just hit after hit after hit. Coupled with a great 2-part intro and finale, and it's a win. Hell, this season had not one, but TWO good Spike episodes. That's freaking unheard-of. In the past 3 seasons, Spike has had exactly ONE good episode devoted to him (Secret of my Excess), and he spent the majority of that episode as a mindless monster.

I love how this season was so amazing. Well, for a reason OTHER than the obvious "you should like good episodes" reason. It almost completely spits in the face of the idea that the show would be "over" once Twilight became a princess. If the show keeps up this level of quality, well, that'd be GREAT.

There's no reason why Cheese Sandwich couldn't come back again. Granted, he'll never be a full-on recurring character, but there's nothing stopping Weird Al from coming back for another guest role. Considering the massive positive reaction that episode garnered, I'd say that they'd definitely consider bringing him back for another go.

It was a great season all around. Lots of hits, and very few misses.

My personal favorite: Filly Vanilli because Rarity and Flutters in a quartet. Shut up and take my bits! ^_^

I liked it, although I think I still prefer Season 2. Still, the final episode was pretty damn amazing. I did however feel that the season began to tail off a bit in the second half from Twilight time, and I'd have liked to see a little bit more of a focus on the Mane 6 as a group, and maybe a bit more of a theme to the season.

Favourite Episodes: Twilight's Kingdom, Filli Vanilli, Simple Ways, Bats, Daring Don't, and Castle-Mania.

Honestly, it's top tier. I don't know for sure if I'd put it above season 2, if so, only barely. If I had to rank it with none being equal, it'd be this...

4>2>3>1

But really, it's this...

4=2>3>1

Season 4 hit so many home runs it kills me. I love it. So many memorable episodes and so much fun to be had. Mature themed ones like Flight to the Finish. Episodes like Simple Ways, the boy crush episode, that shows they can handle basic little girl fair without turning it into cringe inducing stereotypical bull. It had some of the best morals and best moral deliveries of the entire show, definitely walking all over season 1.

Favs: Flight to the Finish, Twilight's Kingdom, Simple Ways, Power Ponies, For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils, Testing Testing 1,2,3

Definitely one of the best seasons so far. Huge improvement over 3.

Some of the episodes I felt were kinda bleh, but they're outnumbered by the good ones. ESPECIALLY the finale which had a very strong finish.

It would be nice to see more of the mane 6 besides Twilight, get some time to have their personalities play off each other.

I find myself in the same boat. Season 2 is still probably my favorite when it comes to overall quality, but when season 4 delivered it freaking DELIVERED. Quality varied wildly from decidedly sub-par ("It Ain't Easy Being Breezies") to some of the best episodes yet ("Pinkie Pride"). There was a seven-week span where they were really firing on all cylinders with one home run after another, starting with "Rarity Takes Manehatten" and ending with "Filli Vanilli." It helped that the opener and finale were both extremely enjoyable as well.

I'll admit, a big part of the reason why I loved this season so much is because so many of my favorite characters were back in the spotlight. Rarity fans like myself finally got more episodes featuring her after waiting for OVER TWO YEARS. Any time Discord shows up is a real treat, and he got more screentime this time around than seasons 2 and 3 combined. I was ecstatic to see the Flim Flam brothers return in "Leap of Faith." Having Weird Al Yankovic guest star as Cheese Sandwich was a hoot as well.

Looking back, I would say season 4 had a theme of "transition." We had Twilight learning her new roles and responsibilities as princess, Discord still not quite "fitting in," the return of Derpy Hooves (albeit silent this time around), retiring the Elements of Harmony, investigating the Everfree castle, the search for the keys, the new toy product placement ultimate discovery of Rainbow Power and a brand new playset castle for the main cast.

I will say this though: I'm going to miss Twilight's old library.

Personally I think it was fantastic, just (just) above season 2 for me. The finale and the opener were superb, I think they dealt with Twilight's princess-hood excellently without it stealing too much focus.

I particularly like what happened with Discord's character, most notably in the finale, he's enjoyed the Mane 6's (mainly Fluttershy's) friendship but he never truly appreciated true friendship (as you can see in his post Keep Calm and Flutter on' episodes), so when Tirek offered both freedom to cause chaos and seeming companionship he went for it, not understanding what he was abandoning, so of course he wouldn't see the betrayal, he's only had Fluttershy's unwavering friendship and didn't appreciate the importance of it until it was too late, now he has had a true redemption and truly understands the importance of Fluttershy's friendship.

It had a few misses for sure (never got on with 'Rainbow Falls' personally, though I think 'It ain't easy being Breezie' is underrated)but all in all it was terrific.

(On an unrelated note I completely forgot I even had this account :p)

Eh, disagree here. I don't think the quality varied as wildly as other people seem to think. Pinkie Pride didn't strike me as something so extremely good, despite being a good musical episode. Breezies wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. A lot of the reviewers were absolutely cringe worthy with that episode. Tom Oliver especially. It's like every time they're reminded of what they're actually watching (a kids show) they throw tantrums. I understand having misgivings about the episode. But any rational adult would simply lament the "toyeticness" of the episode, address it, then move on to other criticisms. Instead I'm treated to man-child level meltdowns. Pathetic.

I can't really think of an episode I really disliked this season. Even the worst were only "meh, could be better" to me. It was consistently up there. The finale really was great, though. I'll admit that. It raised the bar.

A more cynical side of me wants to believe the writers are just laughing at some of the fans through this episode. All season long they've been making fun of the people saying "THE RIDE IS OVER" and "THEY CHANGED IT NOW IT SUCKS"

Discord's numerous "Alicorn Princess" jokes, Pinkie literally playing Hasbro and trying to market Twilight's Princessness, and Twilight herself in the finale literally saying "What do I do now, just smile and wave?" Still not getting through?

The writing staff is LAUGHING at them. Or at least, that's what I'll believe. :p

I thought that too. I think the writers and show animators are totally calling out the naysayers (sorry, I couldn't help it) throughout the entire season 4 finale. And I loved it. I loved Discord's Alicorn statement, and as you said, Twilight wondering what good she was as Princess. It was like they were personally reaching out to smack some of the fans and say, "See? We got this under control. Stop it."
I like how it wasn't all of Equestria being in danger, or Discord betraying them, or even her friends being put in danger, but the fact that Twilight's home--and more importantly, her books--getting demolished is what pushed her over the edge. That was great.

I enjoyed the season, but unlike previous seasons there were no episodes that left me floored. I may feel differently once I get the DVD set and watch all the episodes at leisure (had kind of a weird scheduling thing so that I was almost always struggling to find time to watch the episodes).
I still love the show but this season didn't grab me the way other seasons have.

Probably my favorite season, it in my opinion had the strongest starting and closing storyline arcs. I really loved how there was world building in the starting arc, and then in the finalie arc we get to see Twilight kick some ass DBZ-style.

After the kind of "meh" season 3 (which still had a couple strong episodes), I think season 4 made an overall nice recovery and stand with seasons 1 and 2 fairly well quality wise. I've been watching the episodes as they've been released since early 2011, so I started with the show towards the beginning of season one. The show has changed since then, not in catastrophic ways, but in some ways worse, and in others better, overall, I'm still interested enough that I am awaiting season 5 with some excitement and optimism, especially with the return of M.A. Larson as a writer and Thiessen as a director.

For me, I rank the seasons like this:

Season 2 is probably still my favorite overall, with both a really strong open and close with 2 of the series best villains in Discord and Chrysalis, combined with a pretty solid quality all throughout with the slice of life episodes. The season struck a good balance between developing the world and setting building, and character interaction with episodes like Nightmare night and Hearth's warming helping to flesh out the society and history of Equestria, while other episodes gave us interesting interpretations of mythological creatures, with characters like Iron Will, Ahuizotl, and cerberus. The character episodes also expanded the CMC beyond mindless one trick characters and gave them meaningful interactions with their family and each other.
The season also ditched the obsession season 1 had with cramming Twilight into every single epsiode so she can write the obligatory morality letter. The expansion of the letter writing was also a nice touch, and allowed the episodes to focus entirely on the other 5 ponies without always using Twilight as a framing device. This season also has 2 of my top 5 songs in the series in the Smile song, and This Day Aria respectively.

Season 4 just beats out season 1 for the number 2 spot in my book. The season opener was weaker than season 2's, but it was solid, and didn't feel nearly as cheesy as season 3's opener, or as rushed as the pilot episode. The slice of life episodes were overall pretty good, and the return of the morality mechanic in the journals was a nice touch, even if I still liked the letters just a little bit more. There were a couple duds, but every season has those, and the overall quality was good for me.
The overarching plot with the keys was also a nice framing mechanic, and gave all 6 of the ponies a specific episode for them to shine in. Some of the key episodes worked better than others, but I think it did a good job of breaking up the monotony of solid slice of life episodes between the 2parters at the beginning and end.
The characterization of Twilight and Discord was actually pretty top notch all season, and almost seemed specifically set up to answer questions after the rush job that was Discord's reform and Twilight's coronation in season 3. With Discord, they did a good job at showing that the lesson he learned in season 3 wasn't really something that changed him, and he was still basically a slightly more restrained antagonist all the way until the season 4 finale where the consequences of his flippant attitude finally bite him back and force him into an actual bout of self-reflection that makes his gradual reformation much more believable. With Twilight, while the princess thing was ignored at odd moments, and the Twilight Time episode was kind of strange with only kids seeming to care about her status, she has a good season character arc where episodes that focus on her tend to have her expressing doubt or uncertainty over her position, culminating in the fears expressed in the finale.
Overall, the season capped off with a good finale that has a good villain with Tirek who is worthy of being compared to Discord and Chrysalis in the previous seasons. The finale tied everything together pretty well, and the proclamation by Twilight that her duty is to spread friendship across the land gets me excited that next season will see more locations outside the usual Ponyville, Canterlot, and crystal empire settings. The rainbow power design is silly looking, so I'm glad that's only temporary, and the Twilight castle isn't bad, but I'm hoping it gets decorated to fit more with ponyville's architecture, rather than looking like something out of the crystal empire. The touch with all the ponies (and Spike too) getting thrones in the castle, and having them set up like the Round Table from king Arthur was a very nice touch, and I want to see them do something with the setup next season.

For me, Season 1 is great, and still has some of my favorite episodes, but it's got kind of a weak opener, with Nightmare Moon being kind of a cliche kid's show bad guy who didn't have nearly enough presence compared to Discord, Chrysalis, and Tirek, although she still beats the pants off Sombra. The midseason episodes were what got me to give the show a chance so I mostly like them, the morality lessons were mostly obvious, but they provided a good framing device for some of the episode plots, and characters like Gilda and the Diamond Dogs are still classic character designs that I would like to see return in the future. Season 1 also still has some of the strongest songs, with the Gala and Art of the Dress still feeling like big budget Hollywood showtunes.

Season 3 is definitely the weakest, although part of that is due to its truncated length, there are episodes in it that I liked, with magic duel, and sleepless in Ponyville being the standouts of the season, but overall, even the midseason stuff didn't seem to be going anywhere. Season 1 had the gala and letters, season 2 had the letters, and season 4 had the journal, but season 3 didn't really have anything. The opener wasn't terrible, and some of its scenes were fun, but the songs were nothing special, and the villain was entirely forgettable.
The truth eventually came out that the season was short mostly because it was the final season in DHX's original contract, and they got the news of being picked up for season 4 after writing had already started on episodes, nowhere is this more obvious than the finale for season 3. The finale, with it's clip show and musical format, seems like it was tailormade to potentially act as a series finale, rather than just a season finale. Overall, it wasn't a terrible finale, it had some solid songs, and an interesting plot, but a major change like Twilight's coronation deserved more of a setup than what it got, at least as much as the key episodes and finale in season 4. The overall dilemma of her being made an alicorn just for fixing a spell seems kind of a letdown after earlier episodes having her help takedown major villains threatening the whole country.

In the end, Season 4 has got me interested in seeing where they take the whole castle, kingdom, spreading friendship across the land mechanic. The round table setup of the thrones is also something that could provide interesting plots in the future as the characters wrestle with potential political or social power of their own.

Overall, I highly enjoyed Season 4... There wasn't an episode where I would consider anything less than a "well, that happened" response from me, basically how I reacted all the way through Adventure Time's Season 5 overall length... Just like with Season 2, mostly, I keep wanting to re-watch certain episodes just because of how much I enjoyed them in general...

I mostly liked how it justified Season 3's "questionable" choices as well as bring back Season 1's "overall story arc" in a major way that made it better implemented here than how Season 1 pulled it off... Though, now I'm wondering how Season 5 would stack up against the other seasons, since Seasons 2 and 4 are almost tied for favorite season so far with Seasons 1 and 3 having those sprinkled favorable moments, yet overall not as "good" as the even-numbered seasons in general...

Then again, I'm just happy that M.A. Larson's back for Season 5... and that's all I need to know to justify me liking Season 5 regardless the overall outcome... as petty as that seems, I think... (Also, it's time to wait for the complete Season 4 DVD to come out next year, I guess...)

Pretty much the only thing I remember from the finale was the Twilight vs Tirek duel.

After the duel once that magic box was opened and all the ponies got "beautified" (for no particular reason) I was slammed back to the reality of MLP being a little girls' show. Not that it's a bad thing, but it sure as hell was in stark contrast to Twilight/Tirek and their jaw-dropping Dragonball Z fight sequence. I really wanted to see Twilight single-handedly destroy Tirek's ass with the combined power of 4 fucking alicorns, which was basically a statement from the producers saying "you will never see magic this powerful ever again". But in the end the need for a Mane 6 friendship had to be how it ended : /

I'll agree that the magic box conveniently giving the Main 6 superpowers, defeating Tirek and then turning into a castle seemed a bit...cop-out and arbitrary. So the box was an Elements Of Harmony 2.0 and a convenient plot-ender, that's it?

Also the new castle doesn't even suit Twilight or her friends and looks horribly out of place. What are they going to do while sitting in a circle on those chairs? Discuss politics?

But yeah, the Twilight vs Tirek duel simply over-wrote everything else in Season 4 because it's the only thing I remember now -_-
