I am trying to get back into MMOs. I started with Star Wars Galaxies, played a lot of DC Universe, and then quit for awhile when my kids were born. Now that I find that I have a bit more time, I'd like to get back into them.

I've been playing Wind of Luck - its a naval battle/pirate MMO that is really fun, (windofluck.com) and want to try some others as well. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Firefall is pretty fun. It's free to play, you get mech suits with jump jets, and shooting bugs with a plasma gatling gun is oh so satisfying.

Ditto Firefall, so far I haven't stumbled upon any of the typical F2P downsides. I'm sure there are but at least it's not an in-your-face thing like Star Wars: The Old Republic.

If you wanted a well populated, still vital MMO, you're basically looking at three major choices. World of Warcraft, The Old Republic, or Guild Wars 2. The first is by far the most populated and feature rich, the second has the best "single player" story content, the last is the most casual and easy to dip in and out of.

If you want to support a flailing also-ran with some interesting ideas but shit execution, you could choose to champion The Secret World (good story content, utterly naff game play) or Wildstar (tried to evoke BC era difficulty, accidentally evoked tedium instead). Both have population issues but are relatively new MMOs.

EVE is always available for those who like a largely impenetrable sandboxy space game with a ridiculous learning curve, but it can be tough to get into at this point in its lifespan.

Most other MMOs are either in maintenance mode, or are predatory FTP garbage, and thus not really worth the time invested in them.

EDIT: Isn't Firefall more of a MMOFPS like Planetside? For some reason I assumed OP meant MMORPGs.

It's about as much of an MMOFPS/TPS as Guild Wars is an MMO hack-and-slash. There is a fair amount of skill involved in the shooting department to be sure, but it's still very much an RPG. Pretty good crafting system, character progression based around stats and classes(which you can swap around as you see fit), and plenty to explore and get into.

Guild Wars 2 probably. There's a £30 charge for the game but then no further charges afterwards for subscription. It's a huge game and you can get well over 100 hours play just exploring the world and not even looking at the end-game content or stuff like PVP or WvWvW. Quality game and well worth a buy.

Thanks for the recommendations! Guild Wars 2 sounds fun. Quite honestly, I never had much luck with PvP in MMOs - I've always enjoyed games with a deep campaign/single player mode vs multi, although team quests are always fun.

Here's how I've made out with Wind of Luck in case if anyone is interested - its really fun

I'll keep an eye out for others - I think SW:ToR would be too painful since I loved Galaxies before all the changes ruined it

FFXIV:ARR is the best MMO I've played in years. After bouncing around a lot of them, I finally settled on it.

They have a 14 day free trial available for it now as well, which is great since you normally have to pay to even play it.

It will bombard you with relentless waves of dialogue and prerequisite stuff for the first couple of hours, but when it sets you loose it's got a pretty huge and detail-rich world to explore and plenty of stuff to keep you occupied.

I'd also suggest giving Guild Wars 2 a shot there is a lot of content in the game as well as a large community willing to help people out and if you do hop into Guild Wars 2 I suggest checking out this website in development, it contains some neat builds that are either viable or a tad rediculous.
