I think that there shoud be a zombie MMO in the USA. [Real time] where you travel across the US meeting other players on the way to wherever your going. You can team up or go right on by.
DO you think this is a good idea for an MMO.

So, like a game world as big as the states? the whole of World of Warcraft is only as large as a city.

For a first post this was pretty good, I must say.

Anyway, it'd be cool, but the game world would be so massive that the servers would probably pray to HAL 9000and kill themselves.

But again, it sounds pretty damn awesome. Maybe in a few years, when technology has advanced.

I think I'm just going to say this:

M'aiq prefers to adventure alone. Others just get in the way. And they talk, talk, talk

Somebody already mentioned Dead Frontier. There's also a lot of online multiplayer zombie killing browser games like Urban Dead (http://www.urbandead.com/)

Funcom is working on another one that should be even more interesting: http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/

If they took major cities from around the world (not sure how they'd choose) and did it full scale I don't see why it couldn't work and I for one would give it a try.

It's certainly an entertaining concept, and one I've actually thought about quite a bit myself. I'm just not sure how the specifics would work though. I mean, how big would survivor groups be able to be? (would long-term groups form, like guilds or something? Or would it be more opportunistic soloing and teaming up with other survivors only when convenient) How would infection work? (Would all of the player characters be relatively rare people that are "immune" to the virus?) How large could the game world physically be? (A large city? A state? The whole of the US? (or a different country?) Or even global?) Would players be able to hunker down and fortify a building and perhaps even set up a permanent base? Or would they be constantly forced to stay on the move, looting for supplies whenever they can?)

There are certainly a lot of issues and questions that would need to be answered when making a game like this, but if it was done right, I think it definitely has the potential to be excellent fun.

I'd play it if it was Japan, or somewhere in Europe, but a country-wide America? I can't actually fathom how little there would be for most of it. You have to remember that America is a really, really, really big place with very little in the middle. Due to zombies, you can't have large population centres without attracting them, so no new towns cropping up to fill in the spaces...

Yeah, it'd be rubbish.

Yeah, it'd be rubbish.

How about the UK then.

Honestly, I'm designing an MMORPG at the moment, and I've set it in Kent (the area South of London) and even then, I've seperated various areas by dust storms that can only be travelled by slow-moving armoured trains. With that in mind, it's STILL two-three hour's journey from one end to the other, and most of that is empty wilderness, populated by the ruins of small towns. I've currently got a stop-gap solution of basing events around the player's locations so stuff is always happening nearby, but it's pretty temporary.

Like I say, set it in a state of America and it might work, but for a zombie MMORPG, a city or two (if they're close) and the surrounding countryside would be your best bet. Gamers may say they want massive open worlds, but most of them are unaware of just how boring spending hours wandering and doing nothing would be.

I've just read your idea again and... What about a "road trip" style game, like Lord of the Rings Online or Guild Wars? Say... Each character starts in Los Angeles and hears that a cure has been found in New York, starting them on a fight to get out of LA before the zombies get them and the other survivors, then moving around the South to New Orleans before going up the Eastern coast through New England. You could make the route planned hit multiple cities on the way, making them the playable areas where your character stops to fight more (and, as time has moved on, stronger) zombies and rescue more survivors - when they are strong enough, the "problem" keeping them there is fixed and they can move on. It'd also solve the problem of permanent settlements - the "town" is a central hub that is the travellers fortifying themselves as their vehicles break down/they have to clear the road/they get lost/whatever - it doesn't stay there long enough to attract the horde, and has a storyline reason for being there!

I think this would be awesome.

Actually, just earlier today I was wishing Bioware would develop a zombie RPG.

I love the idea but the only problem is to be a accurate zombie apocalypse the humans would have to be ridiculously outnumbered like over 100 to one and I doubt most people would want to be just zombies so that brings up the issue of how you would accomplish PVP. and for PVE again the people would have to be spread out and outnumbered, that would require low amounts of people to a server and a ridicules amount of NPCs probably more than any game right now could handle. love the idea but practically I can't see how it would work as an MMO

A zombie apocalypse game within a major urban area that isnt New York, such as LA or Tokyo, I think would be pretty awesome. I'm not one to go for zombie apocalypse games, but that... I might actually play it.

I have yet to see a good online zombie game with working barricade mechanics. By that I mean you should be able to go to an infected city to find supplies, and choose a place to hole up. You can use the items in the building/sewer/vehicle as well as the items in your inventory to create a barricade, and then you have to be able to leave to collect supplies from other parts of the city (but only as much as you can carry). There are some issues with this:

1. Do the zombies stop attacking when you log off?
2. What do you do when you're in hiding?
3. It would be hard to play without a load of other people in the same stronghold.

Maybe it would be better as a single player sandbox game, with a "Wait" function so you can wait for the zombies to do interesting things like attacking. You could also have to manage the relationships with the people inside the stronghold in order to prevent mutinies, at the same time as making sure they don't do anything stupid.
