Hey guys,

I've never been one to play MMORPG's before. Infact, I've never played on. I like games like D2 and enjoyed Torchlight recently. So I've decided to have a go at an MMORPG. I'm currently downloading Age of Conan and after that I'll download AION to give a go.

My question to you is, what is the best way to approach these games?

In the past I've usually looked at them as games for social retards and masochists. But in the same sense the ability to just randomly kill things, hunt down cool items and build a character for no real purpose is kind of appealing for a time sink and for relaxation purposes.

So, yeah. Is AoC a good game to start with?

I keep trying to find a good MMO, but most of them are rubbish. I played Dofus for a while, which was fun, but it got boring eventually. Most MMOs just seem to be World of Warcraft clones, and bad ones at that. Why can't somebody make an MMO with combat that doesn't suck?

Perhaps its the genre that you don't like?

I like the concept, but I find allot to be tedious. WoW is just embarrassing IMO.

If you are tired of click this, wait for it to die MMO's, Phantasy Star Universe 2 is in production which has a fully live action combat system.

Pretty much every game with combat boils down to a "click this, wait to die" combat system. IMO MMO's aren't exactly built around combat as their main draw card. Which is something I took a little while to realise honestly. It's simply a means to an end.

How about a list of extremely varied MMORPGs?
-Dead Frontier
-zOMG
-Runescape (I'm so sorry for even mentioning this)
-Ragnarok Online (better off on a private server imo)
-Wakfu (almost like a remake of dofus but meh)
-Vindictus

The best way to approach these games is to look at it with a fresh pair of eyes (weird metaphor but whatever). Try not to constantly compare it to other MMOs and you'll enjoy them longer.

You might want to look at Spiral Knights, as it's essentially "Diablo/Torchlight: The MMO"

Have you tried TERA Online? The combat in it is great and makes it stand apart from other MMOs, I'm enjoying it a lot.

I'm sure you know what meant without the need to splitting hairs.

You can't compare PSO/PSU to something like Everquest, World of Warcraft or even Guild Wars.
They are obviously different combat wise.

you can try
City of Heroes (it's as old as WoW and F2P now, so you have LOADS of content)
Vindictus (3rd peson hack and slash dungeon crawler goodness)
by proxy of Vin TERA, as i heard its combat is similar (and the vids i've seen back this up)

that's actually changing, TERA, and Vindictus are the 2 so far for changing how an MMO should handle. there was another called Blade and Soul that looked like it would have a similar 'twitch based' combat system.

Age of Conan is quite good, only problem is with it's f2p, it's great until you reach the final level and then you don't have much you can do. But the ride is quite good, it's combat is fun, the environments are just stunning and varied. Although they're doing a promotion that grants you access to many dungeons at lower level to high level for free, only till the 31th.

Aion is pretty good, leveling is actually pretty easy with various ingame bonuses, and it's combo combat is fun. It's f2p system is FANTASTIC. Probably best I have ever seen, everything is free, the only cash shop items are cosemetic and help you level faster, but none of it ever gives someone an advantage.
