I've read remarks criticizing the Wii U's gamepad as being a dumbed down iPad or something to that degree.

This has made wondered about the ability for videogame to allow a smartphone or tablet to be used in place of the console's dedicated controller.

Currently we have Smartglass for the Xbox consoles. Some games make use of it, but they don't really sell themselves on it. For the games that do use it, it is used in conjunction with the dedicated controller not as a replacement; correct me if I am wrong.

What I would kind of want to see is a good game designed in a way that allows for the player to use a either the dedicated controller or a tablet, and that the tablet would make an acceptable substitute to the dedicated controller.

Even better is if there were two versions of the game: one console and one mobile, and the two versions can interact with each other to perhaps unlock new ingame features or items.

Basically, imagine the interactions between the main Pokemon games and Pokemon Stadium but with the Nintendo console, a DS, and an tablet or smartphone (and that Pokemon was released for iOS and Android). It could potentially bridge two very different audiences.
