Did you like Goldeneye for 64? Try Timesplitters 2 or Future Perfect, same guys from Rare made a very similar playing game with a lot more stuff.

If don't mind a graphical downgrade then the Conflict games are great TPSs, especially co-op, there's no multiplayer other than that, so all the effort of development went into singleplayer. Actually, I should clarify that, the Conflict Desert Storm and Global Storm games were good, Vietnam and Denied Ops were crap.

STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl and STALKER Call of Pripyat are both decent FPSes, albeit a bit buggy.

Additionally you could try Deus Ex Human Revolution if you enjoy a bit more RPG elements, or Borderlands if you enjoy mindless shooting (with a rather poor story).

I like Far Cry 2, but it has it's flaws, or rather flaw. The regenerating checkpoints were too much for me in the end. I liked, no loved, playing with fire though.
Yeah the Repetition got... repetitive.

Call of Duty 4 is pretty good actually. I don't know if I'd bother with anything else in the series. (I liked the original but it is a little long in the tooth now).
I also like the post CoD4 Treyarch stuff, if only because of Gary Oldman as Reznov.

No. The Call of Duty games have great single player stories.
A true Call of Duty player doesn't care about the campaign
What makes you think that? You can't have a full-priced game for the multiplayer alone.
A true Call of Duty player buys games for the multiplayer alone

(As long as they're Call of Duty games)
You... make me sad to be a gamer.

Anyways, for a decent F/TPS game I recommend

Bulletstorm
Painkiller
Max Payne 3 (once it hits PC)
Deus Ex (first or third games)

That's all I can come up with off the top of my head.

If you're going to get Arma II, get Arma X, it has Operation Flashpoint, Arma I and all expansions, and Arma II and all expansions all for $60.00,the price of a modern full price game.

Anyway, OP,Try out Half life 2 and Episode 1 and 2, great FPS overall, and all based on single player.

As has been mentioned the STALKER games are great.

Otherwise I would recommend Metro 2033. A pretty solid singleplayer only shooter that is a lot of fun and has great atmosphere. It also runs on both console and PC so if your computer can't run it then you can try it on console.

They may not be set in a modern time, but you cannot beat HL2 and its little children. Also there's a very similar, yet horror related game, called FEAR, which you should try.

Or there's allways Fallout 3.

And maybe you don't want to shoot people, try PORTAL!

Out of the ones you mentioned, I'd recommend COD4. I didn't like the other COD games.
Stay well away from Battlefield if you're only after single player.

Others I'd recommend:
Metro 2033 is one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played, it's fucking brilliant
The first Crysis game is still the best FPS you can buy in terms of gameplay IMO (story is absolute shit though)
Max Payne 3 is good, awful story though.
Far Cry 2 was good, although it hasn't aged well

Also, it's not even remotely modern, or single player, but I heartily recommend Tribes: Ascend. It's F2P so you've no reason not to try it.

Depending on what kind of shooting your into you could try sniper elite. Its 2005 release and has aged considerably if your hung up on graphics but has a decently sized campaign. Of course there is always sniper elite v2 as well. Both are however set in WWII so if that's to old then I'd look else were.

how about transformers: war for cybertron?

TPS with a fun campaign, playing as both sides, with the choice of 3 different transformers per chapter (10 total). 3 player co-op too!

Well it turns out, a friend was willing to part with his copy of COD4, so I gave it a shot. (/rimshot)

The campaign lasted me 10 hours, tops. I can't believe how short it was. A better player would probably breeze through the entire thing in two or three. But me, I kind of suck. I have difficulty aiming precisely due to RSI in my right hand and using a trackball.

On to researching/finding the other things on my list now.

Actually, I think I have an idea what I'd really like: something like Far Cry, but without the fucking mutants. I liked that game up until it started trying to be Doom. Not that I don't like Doom, but if I want to play Doom I'll play Doom.

A lot of people have recommended Sniper Elite (both the original and V2), so I'll vouch for that. They're quite good games.

But if you want something else check out E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy... it's French... that's all you need to know...<.<

It's somewhere between Deus Ex and Warhammer 40k... but on steroids...
Don't forget that combination of crack, marihuana, and goat hair it's been inhaling in the bathroom.

Anyhow; there's Metro 2033, Borderlands, Deus Ex: Human Revolutions, the various Fallout games, the Brothers in Arms series, along with many, many others I can't think of.
