Looking over all the posts about DRM hassles, and companies being idiotic, and posts claiming some games arethe best thing since sliced bread... I've realised that I really don't have many modern computer games, aside from Command and Conquer. So I'm curious as to what everyone here thinks. Am I missing out, and PC games still a worthy platform? Or ar the hassles and other problems simply not worth it?

[sub]Is it so hard to come up with your own allegories instead of ripping off "best thing since sliced bread" all the time? I've seen that dozens of times. It's eating me up inside![/sub]

PC is a worthy platform. It's incredibly worthy. It's frikkin' great, dangit.

I have a decent system for PC gaming at the moment, though I run into troubles every now and then with games overall it hasn't been 'unworthy' in any way. Eventually I'll need to upgrade gfx card and memory I'm sure, but PC gaming still consumes more of my time then the 360 does.

For every title that gets a much publicized DRM controversy or horrendously sloppy porting, there are 10 more that work perfectly. Modern PC games are quite good on the whole - we complain so much about the ones that aren't because we really don't want games like that to become the rule, rather than the exception to it.

Modern PC games I own and love.

DCS: Black Shark (über-hardcore combat-chopper-sim)

Dragon Age: Origins (way better and harder on the PC, IMO)

Sins of a Solar Empire (heavy 4X RTS with a beautiful mix of turn-based elements)

Civilizations 4 (another heavy 4X strategy, but this one is purely turn-based)

A Vampyre Story (yes, it's spelled like that. A story about a girl who gets turned into a vampire and doesn't quite believe it)

As a rule I dislike MMOs, although LotRO was nice and the up-coming Star Wars: The Old Republic is looking pretty good. Generally speaking I buy most of my games on the Xbox these days, but there are some must-have titles that only available on the PC. The bottomline for me is that I don't want to miss out on great games, so I don't limit myself to a single platform.

I used to primarily be a PC gamer, but I don't think the hassles are worth it anymore. Consoles offer such great gaming experiences, and provide the vast majority of features that PC games have. That's not to say that PC games don't offer any advantages. The mod community for PC games is huge, games are generally a little less expensive, and certain genres (e.g. real-time strategy) simply work better on PC. That said, being a PC gamer takes a certain amount of dedication that I'm not willing do anymore. So, unless you are a huge fan of the specific genres that perform better on PC, I don't think you are missing out. Put it this way, if you are unsure about it, then don't bother with PC gaming because, as I said, it takes a type of commitment that isn't required by console gaming.

Consoles bend over backwards to take whatever their companies tell them to take.(Macs are worse though)

PCs are the one bastion where you can actually get games/work and generally fun stuff for free.

Then there's MMOs/FPSs/RTSs which haven't really caught on on the consoles yet. PC 4ever.

I disagree about FPSs: there are lots of them on the consoles these days.
Also, it's probably only a matter of time before we get our first console-MMO.

Lots? Bioshock, CoD, HALO and...

And if you really want to see prices shoot up, watch what happens when a console MMO gets released.

In the mean time you have to put up with machines that fall apart permanently, paying to use them, paying for DLC, simply paying for your own convenience.

I'll happily take a little inconvenience to have something I can mould to my configurations. YMMV though.

Well, PC games do have mods, skins, maps, etc.

However, I prefer consoles since I don't have to keep constantly upgrading them usually.

You're definitely missing out if you're avoiding modern games altogether. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are superb, The Saboteur is an underrated game, and indie gaming is going strong.

Name a few modern titles you've played and I'll see if I can suggest any others you might like.

BF2 as far as i'm concerned it the best PC game available...still.
well, for FPS, still plenty of good strategy games since then, my favourite being SupCom and sins (my most recent PC game...:/ )
maybe, if you can handle it, crysis would be pretty good.

Yes, the PC, being the most adaptable and capable of the lot, is still worth the "hassle".

Try anything from Valve, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Crysis & Warhead, etc. etc.

Don't think that you should only bother getting exclusives for the PC - the majority of games that are ports are well made, and you're always getting a one-up on the consoles one way or another (unless the port is awful; ain't that right, GTA IV?).

Most of the titles that most people want to play are available on other consoles, but Wings of Prey just came out and goddamn me if that's on a console.

PC isn't just a worthy platform, a PC is THE BEST gaming platform. It's the dearest though but at least that filters out kids and frat-boys.
