It's become almost insane, if you are a gamer and have not yet heard about Modern Warfare 2 then you must have been taping your eyes shut and popping corkscrews in your ears for the past 4 months. But a lot of people have recommended i played Modern Warfare 2 stating it would probably be my kind of game as i am utterly in love with FPS. So what the diddly, let's play it and see if it reaches the golden turd reviews people have been giving it.
First part is campaign, which i found to be very overwhelming, it was mainly the graphics and game-play that got me the most hooked, to be honest i did not even remember the story but i ignored that because the game looked so damn impressive it did not bother me. The gunplay just seemed to flow and every mission was incredibly entertaining and cinematic leaving me with an experience i was sure to remember. I practically dropped my jaw at the mission with the snowmobile as stealth has always touched me as something horrendously hard to pull off, and it just seemed to work perfectly.
The only minor complaint i would give campaign mode is the tedious cover shooting you will have to do in every...single...level... On the mission in Rio De Janiro i was listening to the TF141 units scream about capturing some guy in hot pursuit whilst i was stuck waiting for blood to fall off my face and moving at snails pace past enemy lines. "Wow...i sure wish i could be having as much fun as those guys...", the pausing really does spoil the gameplay, especially on the higher difficulties where anything so much as a nail stub your toe will cause your face to be waterfalling with blood.
Spec ops however was very enjoyable much like its campaign counterpart, each mission was full of fun extras and different scenarios to help keep things fresh and entertaining. Obviously it was much more fun with friends and my favorites must have been when i was defending my online friend with an AC130 gunship whilst his little legs ran towards a check point, it was pretty damn fun looking back. However a lot like the Left 4 Dead series, in order to truly have fun with this mode you must be sure to play it with friends in order to guarantee the most fun, which neatly brings me on to the final section...
Online Competitive Multiplayer (OMG!)! Before i say what i thought, understand that before i play ANY multiplayer game i always push myself to have a quick go at Team Fortress 2 to remind myself what the perfect multiplayer game actually is, and see if it meets the same standards. Sadly i have been highly disappointed with the multiplayer aspect as it is purely like the other 90% of multiplayer games out there, it is only fun when you are winning.
The main problem is you die too bloody fast! Ladies and Gentlemen there is a VERY fine line between realism and fun, and Modern Warfare 2 is constantly swerving between these 2 roads like a grandma without glasses on a highway. It just means that it only takes around 1-5 bullets or a single knife slash before you are insta killed, someone told me "Oh but MW2 is awesome online! You slowly unlock cooler stuff and even killstreak rewards so you can WTFPWN to your hearts content!!!". That's all well and good but sadly there is just a teeny...weeny...little problem...
Why would you want to?
Yes, yes it is fantastic when you unlock a plane but all of the killstreaks do exactly the same thing when you unlock them to...well...give you more kills? Presumably this is all to encourage players to unlock the Tactical Nuke, a mystical device of pure unholy hellness that will end the game and kill everybody in a fiery inferno whilst you crack open a coke and watch the fireworks. But get this, you have to get "25 BALLBUSTING AGONIZING KILLS IN A ROW"!!!!!! No thanks. As for the weapon unlocks most of the guns are the same power anyway so what is the point?
Well overall i enjoyed Modern Warfare 2 even if the multiplayer side was disappointing and caused me to break a total of 3 controllers against my now lovingly broken mirror. Let me put it this way, if you are a fan of any FPS then you will love Modern Warfare 2 with all your heart as it is probably the best you are going to get at the moment. Give it a go, you will have a blast
