"Modern Warfare" shooters...

For the last few years, the industry changed from making shooters about World War 2 and killing Germans, to shooters about shooting Russians or Muslims, like the Modern Warfare and Medal of honour series. I believe most of the escapists are immensely bored by this.

So I ask you... Should we make games out of the 'arab spring' revolutions?
You start out as a normal university student in Tripoli, witness some shitty things done by Gaddafi's militia's/army, and join the rebels...
Or currently the civil war in Syria...

So. Got any brand new ideas on what shooters should focus on?

Well I wont be making any shooter games but I think shooters may go more into a fantasy setting in the future maybe dark fantasy as they have already done modern, historical and sci fi to death or if not fantasy maybe more a steampunk shooter setting.

Im not bothered though I havent enjoyed shooters since Halo 2 Ive been totally burned out on them (mostly FPS) I think they should largely be left alone for 10 years and then be revisited and revitalize the genre (sub-genre/whatever).

Modern day type shooters in particular have lately become almost as saturated as WW2 shooters were, at least thats what im feeling.

Let's just get away from modern times altogether. I'm so tired of holding M16's and AK-47's.

Give me my damn laser guns back.

I wouldn't mind older shooters. Mount and Blade: Napoleonic wars is a lot of fun and a dedicated shooter on that could be fun, although it would of course also feature much melee combat and such.

They should focus on not being shooters, there have been many waves of over saturated genres and this is no exception, once you overfeed on one taste the diet just needs to change.

Sadly where sales would flop in the old days the industry now is so big their marketing can overcome peoples distaste and the companies can just keep pushing the same old stew, ultimately convincing customers this is what they actually want... so this time it may take a while.

Or, you know, as an alternative some people like them?
I dislike the suggestion that if you like a modern FPS that you're somehow a brainwashed moron.

Ya know what game I really want? A 3rd-person action game based around Brute Force:

I wouldn't play an Arab Springs FPS but that's mainly because I don't care about modern shooters. I've played the first two Modern Warfare games, the first of which I own and the second I rented a couple years ago.

As for a FPS that I would play...How about Republic Commando 2?

That is a description you chose for your kind, and I do wonder why.
There are always people who are easily amused, and for those change means about the same as chewing the same old thing, so they loose nothing while others gain prosperity... it's a win win.

I'd like a dark fantasy shooter like the good old Hexen/Heretic series, modern/recent historical settings always seem kind of tasteless to me.

Except I'm not one of them.
Give me a WW2 or Napoleonic shooter any time. Having said that, I'm not as opposed to modern shooters as some people.
Let people play what they want.

I completely agree with that, what I do not agree with is the accountants training indifferent people what they must like, and that apathy consequently shaping the market.

Sure. But instead of being some WASP college kid visiting Tripoli for spring break, and instead have the protagonist be (god forbid) one of the arab rebels. It wouldn't be hard to do - just have the protagonist start off a semi-regular (this is important, ARAB) dude with good fighting skills, give it a semi-Half Life 2 intro, which turns into combat when you have to fight off one Gaddafi's rape squads. From there you search out the rebels, fire bullets until Gaddafi's men stop twitching, and other usual shooter stuff.

I've heard this from a number of my friends, and I don't quite understand it. What's so much more interesting about a laser gun than a regular gun? You're still pew pewing at random hordes of underdeveloped bad guys (only now probably aliens instead of Russians).

Same shit, different wallpaper.

Me, I'm happy with any genre so long as it tries to tell a good story.

...Except maybe zombies. God fucking damn am I sick of fucking zombies.

Nope... Arab Spring, as you call it, was supposed to be peaceful, but since leaders clung to their seats people fought against each other. You can be a 30 year old worker that fights against an enemy tribe... Your perception of what was the Arab spring was isn't very logical.

I don't know why they have to be modern. Why can't we have futuristic shooters? There are so many more opportunities for creativity in that.

Doesn't even need to be space battles and laser guns. One of my favourite shooters of all time was Battlefield 2142. It wasn't overly futuristic, but you had access to certain technologies that don't exist yet, and it gave it a different feel to other military shooters. I've also been having a blast recently with the new Tribes game. It feels completely unique when compared with other current gen shooters.

Futuristic shooters are the way forward.

(As a side note, I know the new CoD game is going to be a futuristic shooter as well. I won't be pre ordering or anything, but I'll keep my eye on it.)

I'd like to see a Modern Warfare game where you go progressively more mad, start hallucinating, wake up in a different location or world altogether. Maybe you have a heated argument with your gun at some point. Maybe the enemies start to warp into hideous monsters. The possibilities are endless!

Also, if this game already exists I would very much like to know what it is called. I really want to play a game like this.

I adore the fact that your huge innovation was moving from 'modern warfare' to 'a few months ago' warefare, OP. Have you got any ideas for the next Batman reboot? Maybe his suit could be gray instead of black? What am I saying, I'll leave it to you, man; you're the expert at revolutionising the shit out things, after all.

Slightly more OT: I'd like to see a return to the tongue in cheek FPS's like Timesplitters. I played that a few months ago for the first time in years and within minutes there was a snowman on a flying carpet shooting flares at me until I killed him with a harpoon gun.

I was a cactus in dungarees at the time.

That single sentence contains more creativity than the last seven years of shooters, combined.

I'd like to see some proof of this. Beyond "They are making a lot of games which are like a game that sold well."
