He didn't HAVE to say anything, but he chose to make note publicly of how generous he is being.

Ugh.
I agree it does seem like he said it just to try and most likely get/got more good rep with people. That is cool he declined it. He didn't need to tell everyone he declined it.

No, it's not even trolling, it's just not reading the article and taking the title at face value about Notch contemplating to block Minecraft video revenues right now.
Hehe, no. Even going to Youtube with the intent of laying down the law is not a nice move, him denying the offer was a way of saving his arse.

A potential backstabber is still a backstabber.
So what if it was just for public relations reasons? Our backs remains unstabbed.

I think that's the point you're missing.

He could have taken then greedy Nintendo route, but he didn't. I could probably steal everything that isn't nailed down in my office building, but I don't.

Thinking about something, even thinking really hard, isn't the same thing as doing that thing.
No, I think you're missing the point.

He is willing to exploit so long as he keeps his PR, that's sleazy.

If someone nearly/tried to kill you, you don't greet them with flowers but with mistrust...Unless you're like some worshipper.
I also wouldn't call someone an attempted killer for thinking about it & deciding not to

He realized it would displease the fan community, which is where his money comes from, so he decided against it. That's not sleazy, that's smart business
I think the point that is trying to be made is that (sticking with the "murder" scenario) was that if someone was "tempted" to kill you and then told you the next day you might feel a little... upset. For instance we can observe the stockholm syndrome basically mistaking lack of abuse for kindness.

In the end, Mojang decided that it would be better to not interfere with the community; the videos draw plenty of attention as it is, and those views can be considered free advertising for the game. To take the ad money away from popular YouTube personalities could push them away from Minecraft...
The way I see it is that Notch decided that he could gain a bigger "slice of the pie" by keeping the videos up as advertising, but also because taking the revenue would create a bigger backlash then it was worth. Essentially Machinima is already making money off of Minecraft anyway so...

Notch is a dick, should we all be so surprised?

Quite frankly, now that I've got Minecraft Mojang could just disappear...Screw the updates as well, all they've done is broken the game, the bloodly engine.
A person on the escapist who just read the title and not the article, should we all be so surprised?

Notch is a business man, I hardly believe for a second he chose not to do it out of the goodness of his heart but because, unlike Nintendo, he knows PR makes or breaks a small company like his. Is he a dick for making the smart choice? No. Is he purposefully telling us he had the option but didn't take it? Yes.

No but seriously if that was me I would have spanked Machinima just for the heck of it, oh you think I should pay you for allowing you to use my game? Well enjoy your ad revenue being hijacked by me. Of course it would have been a stupid business decision, I would have just laughed and told them to stuff it where the sun don't shine or I would file a lawsuit for any and all revenue made prior to this point using my game.

Why am I so mean and vindictive against Machinima? Because they are already a bunch of exploitative douchebags offering unlimited contracts to teenagers barely out of highschool or still in highschool that sign over all rights forever and ever and can never ever be broken to any video content they make. They are a bunch of businessmen who hijacked a fan site when the fans could no longer support the growing costs and turned it into a money printing machine.

So 3 key pieces of info there:
- Google is actually the one offering these deals, the backstabbing pricks
- Machinima is extorting all devs for add revenue
- and the only ones left with a modicum of decency are indie devs
sound about right. Google were always going the "ad revenue goes to big people while you slave for us" strategy. eccept thy provide great service, for free, so yeah we will still use it.
Machinima seem like some conglomerate of activision like. a whirpool that sucks in godo stuff and spats out destruction. the only good thing there was Freemans Mind, and even that kidn shut down.
And really is it any news that indie devs have more decency. the big companies, well, almost all of them kinda tried their best to mess things up lately.

Do we always have to look on the negative side of everything? I mean, with all the bad news being circulated around on a constant basis, I'm actually glad to get some good news. I mean seriously, if he was honestly trying to use this incident to purely paint himself as good, I would think that he would've said "I didn't consider it for a second," and not "it was tempting."

I think it's nice Notch took the time to tell us about how he's not an asshole. I enjoy doing this as well. For instance, I was walking to the store earlier and I saw a stray cat and I didn't try to kick it or anything, how awesome am I?

If Mojang was meeting Youtube with the intention of getting revenue from Let's plays then you are right.

However they were offered the ad revenue by Youtube and turned down the offer. Honestly it just seems you are jumping at opportunities to hate him.

Wha...?

*runs off to check Ross Scott's website*

Whew. Thought he'd dropped it altogether. Turns out he didn't like a new contract Machinima wanted him to sign (and given what this story has shed on their business practices I'm not surprised) and will now be using Blip.tv. And he says he's got a new episode going up sometime this weekend :)

OT: If Youtube are doing the rounds at the moment (which seems likely) I wonder who else they're making this offer to?

That's because Indie developers are gamers and dependent on their fans. Get into the big leagues and you've got people in charge who have never touched a video game in their lives and wouldn't be caught dead talking to their community unless it was a publicity stunt. As a result you get out of touch, over paid, walking bags of pig excrement sitting around dreaming up new ways to %&^& people over for more money.

I honestly don't understand all the corporation worship that goes on in this country. We've seen time and time again that corporations hate you. You are nothing more than a inconvenient barrier between them and your wallet. It baffles me how many people stand up and defend them.
You're completely clueless and an idiot if they think they don't take into account goodwill mate.

One has to wonder when YouTube offered it, and why it's popping up now - in the wake of Nintendo's blunder. The timing and having to advertise it, when most business deals are usually kept behind closed doors is just very ... suspect.

I think the point he's trying to make is that it's more of a PR stunt, catering to the fanbase and bandwagon jumping and exploiting community goodwill.

If I was him I'd claim it and donate money to charity provided that there are no analysis of the game nor any form of effort coming from the YouTubers part.

I've seen enough lps that just have lazy voice overs and unfunny jokes added to them. They certainly don't deserve the money. Play them for games. If for profit then they can just fuck off.

I think off it this way: If abridged series creators such as guys of dbz series don't make money directly from the videos neither should those lazy bastards.

"Mojang isn't the only one viewing these videos are free advertising."

Wow... If you don't see the problem with that sentence please stop writing professionally. Also, if you understood Notch as a person this article would have been written differently. That line "it was tempting" fits in with his sense of humor. He could have just as easily said "never in a million years we are not stupid." but he will go for what he thinks is funny every time PR be damned.

Edit: I actually don't like Notch as a person or as a businessman. This is more that I think the article is borderline sensationalist, trying to cash in on anything even remotely related to the big news, aka the Nintendo debacle; not a defense of Notch.

There's no way this is going to become a thing that companies do. In fact, I would bet Nintendo is going to reverse their decision soon.

The instant professional YouTubers can no longer make money on a certain type of video, they stop making it. If companies really start making more of these claims, the companies won't make any money as the LP market will simply dry up.

I would be curious to see how many LPer's have pulled their videos in light of Nintendo's decision. As far as Notch goes I must be out of the loop cause I don't have any reason to see the guy as a dick. I do see this as a RP move and it does make sense to use it as such. Frankly the LP'ers should be glad Notch isn't taking the company public because if he did you know the investors would sign this deal with Youtube in a heartbeat.

Nice move Machinima, nice move. Seriously, I could have pointed to how badly you treat your content producers (Such as Ross Scott, creator of Freeman's Mind who left Machinima earlier this month after 4 months of not being able to post videos), but I think this takes the cake.

OT: Saw this a few days ago. Glad they didn't, and I can understand why they were tempted. Seriously, think of how many of the biggest gaming channels do Minecraft.

Well with this news I have come to the conclusion of a few things:

1. Notch may be kind of a dick sometimes, but he isn't stupid enough to make a quick buck off of the thing that pretty much gave him all his money in the first place.

2. Youtube is becoming dumber and dumber as a company as time goes on (yes I know they are part of google, but they are basically a branch of google.)

3. I really hate this kind of stuff.
