Mojang's Scrolls Charges Into Beta Next Month

The Minecraft developer is almost ready to deal out a new hand.

If you got in early on the Minecraft craze, you know the drill. Minecraft developer Mojang is preparing to roll out a paid PC beta for its next game, Scrolls, by the end of April. Those who buy in early will get to try out the strategy/trading card game as it's developed, and will retain ownership as it transitions from beta to the full release. There's still a good amount of work to be done before version 1.0, but positive feedback from the game's alpha build has the team confident that it's ready for the gaming public.

"We've been wanting to release it for a while," admits Mojang co-founder Jakob Porser, "because we want it to have the same sort of development as Minecraft. We'll release it early at a discount. With the help from our community, we'll take the game to the next level and see what we want to do and what they expect out of the game and you can work around that."

The game is based on the collectible card game genre, but Mojang is committed to a single-purchase price model. Once you buy the game (or the beta) you can expect long-lasting support via free updates, not unlike the development model Mojang has refined for Minecraft. "I don't think there is any way of avoiding that expectation," says Porser, "but at the same time you can't really complain. It's working. We like to think of the way we develop games as more of a service." Mojang has considered premium payments for features like cosmetic upgrades, but fans shouldn't be concerned that Scrolls will end up as a battle of wallets - Porser assures that actual gameplay will be kept "as far away from monetization as possible."

Porser jokes that if the team was in it for the money, they wouldn't be making a digital strategy board/card game. Minecraft has sold over 25 million copies total, giving the team a serious buffer to fall back on if Scrolls sells poorly. "I have no expectation that Scrolls is going to sell way beyond Minecraft," says Porser, "absolutely not. What I would like is for the game to find a core, a bunch of players that actively love the game. The beautiful thing with Mojang and the success of Minecraft is that we really don't have that pressure, that every game has to sell x amount of copies or we're going to go bankrupt. So we're in a good position that we can experiment and try some of the stuff that we want to do and we are going to do that."

Scrolls will begin its PC beta in late April. Once it's a little further along, Mojang plans to port it to Mac, with Linux being a potential destination as well.

Yeah I guess landing face-first into a pit filled with money can do a lot to de-stress a publisher-developer.

Let's see how well this card game does for Mojang. The game just doesn't seem like it would be for me, but maybe people will enjoy a video game about card battling.

Have to pick this one up just based on the massive amount of enjoyment I got out of minecraft. I really feel like I got more then the price-tags worth of enjoyment out of that so in my mind, soar or flop scrolls is a reputation buy.

Card games aren't really my cup of tea, but maybe I'll check this out. On a side note, where's 0x10c? That's something I'd gladly throw my money at!

I think everyone feels that way about minecraft........ I spent $60 to buy GW2 the day it came out and spent maybe ten hours playing TOTAL.... Minecraft... I spent $25 and god only knows how much time I have logged, Mojang doesn't track it for me so I dunno........

I am waiting for the "Always Online DRM" hate to come rolling it....... Because it totally won't.

Side note.... If someone was to make a fantasy game about dragons, and call it "The Elder Dragons" would Bethesda send out lawyers?

maybe, depends on how much they can sue for, no doubt, but I think it will have the same effect.

I for one am looking forward to this. Used to play Magic way back when I was in high school, until it got too expensive for me and I decided to sell my cards. For half of the fun from Magic came from was buying new packs, opening them up to see what I got, then working them into the rest of my collection to build decks. Actually playing the game against friends was the other half of the fun.

I've had the occasional desire over the years to get back into it in a more casual digital format, but Wizards of the Coast has never shown an interest in combining the two above pieces into a single one-time purchase PC game. Either they make a single player (with multiplayer options) game that gives you the tactical battles of magic but restricts you to pre-built decks, or they do a digital recreation of the standard game using the FTP model to get in but making you pay for the cards.

I missed out on the Pokemon craze but could you imagine playing through a version where you don't really capture new pokemon but have to make it through the game by picking one of 5 per-determined groups? That's kind of the problem I have with any Magic games, while Mojang's Scroll's looks to be far more to my liking.

I still have mad respect for GW2.
Have not played it in a while but its nice to know that its around all free and stuff just waiting for me to come back and get a little value out of it.

But yeah. I have actually been anticipating scrolls for some time. Upon seeing what it looks like now, this close to beta release, I am just a little disappointed in the art direction. However with a little research into the wikis, it looks to play really solid and that counts for a lot.

SOunds awesome and I'll certainly be getting it, I just hope they don't expect another cash cow like they got with Minecraft. Successes like that come along once or twice a generation, and they are never replicable. They just happen.
