Hey, I'm not really sure if there will be much response to this but I thought it might be a cool thing to do. I work in the finance industry, specifically I help people learn to manage their money and pick investments based on their tolerance of risk, immediate needs and long term goals (no, I'm not just a financial advisor but it's part of my job).

What I want to ask my fellow Escapists is this: What do you know about money? Do you have problems with it, do you love it? How much do you expect to have in the future? What are you doing to insure your future? Do you set a budget or do you wing it?

Basically, do you control money or does it control you?

Just curious, I love money so maybe some people here do as well.

1. I know money smells good. I also know many economists are full of shit.
2. Our relationship is on the rocks, I don't think it loves me
3. I don't love it, more like friends with benefits
4. Enough to live without problems?
5. Saving and investing? Playing the lottery
6. Both, I have a budget, but I wing it too.
7. We share control I am generally in control...oooh look games for sale be back dude.

OT: Money has a habit of burning a hole in my pocket. Although when I focus, I can save quite a bit. Recently bought a new computer (cost me 2300 bucks. Uber PC)

Its a gas, keep your eyes off my stash...

Now that the obligatory reference is out of the way its time to answer.

I do like money, I hope to have plenty of it, or at least enough. After all you kind of need it in our society.

Clearly you are better at resisting urges then I am, for that, I applaud you!

I have huge money troubles, after my university adventures, I am now £2700 in debt, and 3/4 of my earnings are being plowed into paying it off. The small amount that I keep after paying the Government to do their thing, soon dissappears and I really don't know where.

In short, I hate money, I hate how it is placed above the lives of average people in the eyes of the rich, I hate how no matter how you came into the money, those with assume they are better than those without and I hate how I work harder than most people my age and I am still far worse off.

However it is perhaps a necessary evil, and my future career should give me lots of it.

I took a number of economics courses at my university, a course in finance, and a course in accounting, just so that I can better understand how money works. These courses were all just for my own sake, and had nothing to do with my major, I took them just to understand how to better manage my money.

I have a budget set up which I follow fairly stringently. I have money put away for everything, including fun and emergencies, and what I don't spend gets put into my savings account.

I control my money, it does not control me. My parents spent a great deal of effort to teach me the difference between needs and wants, and how to spend my money most effectively.
I could kiss you, really I could.

Well, I guess I should kiss your parents for doing it right.

Am I grossing you out yet? Sorry, if more of the people I met when I started my career were like you I would have passed a client log of mostly millionaires to my replacement when I got promoted.

What are you doing with the money in your savings? Putting it anywhere to make some more or just hoarding it for something huge?

Have you ever played a shooter and never used one of the powerful guns because you were afraid you'd need the ammo later?

Well, apparently that gaming habit crossed over into the real world for me, and I treat money pretty much that way. I'd say it's a far more useful habit in real life than it is in games.

Dude, I might have some of my employees start using that as a metaphor when we get younger people in.

"Okay, this money you set aside is ammo for your 920-CAIN. Do you want to use it on the final boss? Well then, let me show you how to take down the smaller bad guys with your pistol and maybe a little sniping."

I know enough about money to know I don't like it.

I have a huge gripe with government assistance in my country for policies that trap people into a cycle of dependance and low-paying jobs. Surely it is better to invest generously in people who can then earn decent wages (and hence decent amount of taxes) than give them a pittance and watch them drop out of studies because they are starving? I just quit my tertiary studies because I couldn't care for my bipolar affective disorder on the $120 AUS they give me a week for food, bills, medicine, entertainment, studies, study resources, etc.

It was my dream to do digital art and computer animation so I could create art assets for computer games. I'm never going to fulfil it. I am already 23 and I'm back to working in a cafe kitchen.

I'll hopefully learn enough on my own to make games as an indie, but I'm bitter. I've supported myself since the age of 18, but the cost of living in Perth, WA, and the lack of opportunities and jobs combined with having a chronic medical condition, has stalled me from being able to move beyond entry-level jobs and pay.

Enough complaining! I have an awesome idea for a platformer. Must go write it down!

I spend money too easily. That's why I made the anti-semitecally named (I'm not racist) "Jew Jar".

Once money goes in the Jew Jar, it doesn't come out till I'm done saving.

"Money money money... Must be funny.. In a rich man's world."

Impulse buyer over here (v '-')^ I spend because I can.

Luckily I still live at home and don't get that much money anyway, so I'm safe for now. I'm getting better at not spending it all on shiny rubbish though. =P

I earn £1200 a month, I spend £1200 a month. Sure I could try and save but I enjoy the little luxuries like cigarettes and alcohol too much to give them up. That and it would make me go insane.

Lets see, I have car payments, insurance payments, rent, petrol, food, tv and internet, car tax,mot and service to put aside for. And I still live at home ffs. I could probably save £400 a month but then we take £160 out for cigarettes, another couple of hundred for going out drinking...yeah it all dissappears.

1. I know how to balance a budget and file my taxes. I'm a bit shaking on a lot of financial things though (buying a home, loans, and other things I haven't done yet).

2. I hide my money's ugly face away. I save my money and spend only what I need 95% of the time. The other 5% is the occasional night out or something I've had my eye on (like a new dress or a game).

3. I expect to have enough to meet my needs. I'm going to school to work/teach in anthropology which requires me to get a PhD. A professional anthropologist/professor gets paid enough for me.

4. I have a savings account that I put some of my paycheck in for right now. I plan on having a better savings plan when I'm earning more than my part-time retail job pays.

5. Both. I know how much I need for rent and things of the like. I mentally budget the excess.

Money controls how much I can live in the moment. It doesn't control my life though. I'm good with making my money count. I don't really stress about it. I don't have a spending problem and I'm not a tightwad.

I have little to no use for money. I spend enough to get by. The rest sits unused.
Not for long, of course. I still live with my family, and my money is essentially theirs. If something ends up breaking - and something always does - it's usually up to me to pay for it. Which I do not really begrudge. I have no idea what to do with spare money. I'm not really a fan of luxurious spending.

I imagine once I move away, I won't really have that problem. I only pay for groceries and the odd bill right now. Once I've got the whole spectrum of adult living to deal with, I'll be struggling to get by.
I actually did a plan. The margin for error was only about thirty euros. Not as large as I would have liked it. But I'm eager to be living by myself as soon as possible, so there is not much I can really do.

I... think that answers just about everything, right?
In a sort of roundabout way.

Money is a bizarre and intriguing concept.

On the one hand, it is an idea required to live modernly and comfortable; on the other, you spend your whole life essentially working for nothing. You get a piece of paper that holds value only because people think it does.

I have a job where I get lots of cash in hand every week so I just wing it. But if I feel I'm holding too much, large amounts make it into the bank. Always seems to keep growing, but that will change soon as I recently quit my job.
