if you buy freedom unite and have a PS3 you can Adoc party with random people.
(the adhoc is complicated, but there's videos to explain how to use it).

Adhoc parties are fun

i've been meaning to get it myself, just been too poor haha
Have you played a monster hunter game before?
If not the difficulty curve can annoy some people.
But once you learn the game, it's amazing. I was hooked when I killed my first monster.
Yeah i've played it before, and i found it quite fun
but as i said previously, i been too skint to afford it

I had been playing the hell out of Freedom Unite for about a month or so. Unfortunately, I tired myself out a bit on the game. The elder missions stopped being fun towards the last one or two brackets (pre G-Rank that is), and finding decent people to play with over Adhoc was rather fruitless. There is a friend that I had played with regularly, but because we were not able to play very often and that I was no longer interested in the single player, my attention started to drift toward other games. (Balders Gate II, of all things, currently).

Anyway, I wouldn't mind picking up the torch again sometime. If anyone is interested (and uses AdHoc Party), pst me to exchange PSN tags.

Ooh...care to explain why?
I reckon the Wii's motion controls might change the game from tactics and knowing where and when to go for monsters to just waving the Wiimote at the screen and spamming attacks.

Also, Nintendo might go for exclusivity, which means no more Monster Hunter for PSP =(

Wow...an actual reason. (Nintendo fan here) I don't think so. I played the PS2 version only and using the analog stick to fight was a bit odd but functional. So I welcome the motion controls and online play.

I have Freedom Unite, and my other three friends also picked it up. Mainly because we only got PSPs to play with each other and this seemed like a nice multi-player PSP game.

I'm playing it right now, and I have to say that I suck at it. Mostly due to my broken analog stick that fails to register the 'Forward' and 'Sideways' commands, and therefor I can't dodge the attacks of them.

And I can't seem to get past the Bathalios.

Ouch about the analog. It might be time for you to buy a new PSP.
Also, are you talking about Basarios?

(My PSP is one of the first! I will never abandon it!)

..Probably.
That giant rock thing in the vulcano area. I never seem to remember the names correctly.

Yes, that would be Basarios.
If you need to know monster weaknesses, I suggest you go here.
http://faqs.ign.com/articles/715/715099p1.html

I'll tell you an easy way to open up Basarios's chest.

First, bring one shock trap and bring two trap tool and two genprey fangs (to make more shock traps). Lure the Basarios to the shock trap (he'll charge you). While he is in the shock trap, place to large barrel bombs under his chest. I'd recommend Lrg. Barrel Bomb+ though.
Run a little away from the trap and bombs and throw a stone at it. (Bring about 10 stones in case your aim is off). Repeat this procedure all three times you trap him in the shock traps. This will help weaken and may possibly open up his chest. Once his chest is opened up, he become a lot easier to kill.

Combinations:
Shock trap - trap tool and genprey fang
Lrg Barrel Bomb- gunpowder and large barrel
Lrg Barrel Bomb+ - Lrg. Barrel bomb and scatter fish.

Extra Tips:
-For the Basarios (and later Gravios) I would recommend you bring a water elemental weapon. Both Basarios and Gravios are very weak to water. If you do not have a water weapon, dragon is also pretty good against them.

Side Note:
-PSP's are getting pretty cheap (especially used ones at Gamestop), I suggest you get a new PSP before too long. =P

Huzzah! I have bested him!

Thanks for the tips! I've been able to kill him without too much trouble.

Side Note on the Side Note:
I'll get a new PSP when the Go! arrives, it will be a hardware upgrade, and new. If it features PSP - Go! backwards compatibility I will get it when it launches.

I've been playing monster hunter since it first came stateside. The ps2 version that is, psp ones IMHO sucks for the lack of the second stick and completely online play. I'm sorry the only way to play monster hunter for me is to use that stick for attacking and doing it with friends, psp gives me neither. ((Yes yes I know I can play multiplayer but you have to be like right next to them. Nothing more then wireless gameboy connector, and my friends live all over the world so what help that would be.))

So yeah I'm really hyped to try MH3 out, that wii motion might get another good use.
*edit* Anyone else remember the gmr crome heart? Too bad that mag had to go down, it's what informed me about monster hunter in the first place.
