Hey guys, I feel a bit selfish for making at topic strictly on a game I bought but I just wanted some info that I can't get from videos/reviews I've read and I was hoping you guys could maybe help out.

I just got Monster Hunter Freedom Unite because I saw a review for Tri (Prefer handheld version for reasons) and I've yet to open it yet, I just wanted to see what people had to say about it. I want to play it but also I don't want to open it up to find the grind that MMO people enjoy because I don't enjoy that. I don't like spending 5 hours of grind to get 1 part of a set of 7 pieces of armor that's obsolete by the next boss battle. I recall the first one being pretty grind heavy but I also only was in 10 hours or so before I gave up (friends surpassed my level to the point catch up was impossible). This one I hear you can play easier single player because of a CPU partner which sounds good to me since my friends have all said no to playing with me.

To sum it up, what do/don't you like about the Monster Hunter series (Unite if you'd like to help me out more haha) is there a lot of grind? Is it fun single player?

Well, Unite starts out a little slow, because you have the lowest weaponry, and getting used to the controls takes a freaking long time. But after a small half hour it's surprisingly fun. You don't need to grind to complete the missions, the missions give you plenty rewards, but if you want to have a certain gear entirely you'll have to hunt a monster thrice.

So yeah, it repeats itself a bit, but it's really fun, and satisfying, to see that dragon-as-big-as-a-skyscraper go down.

(I've only played Freedom Unite, on the PSP, so I can't compare it to any other MH in the series.)

I absolutely love Monster Hunter ever since the very first game. It sounds like you are coming from the first game? If that's not correct, then correct me, I'm going to go on a bit as if it is so.

Freedom Unite is a very good game, many people I know enjoy it even more than Tri. It is very fun single player definitely, your companion won't be anywhere close to like having another Hunter around, but it does provide support in its own little ways (Even if it's just distracting the monster occasionally.)

Some grindy aspects have been toned down a lot, for one gathering non-monster materials is much easier as they give you the Pokke Farm, which essentially gives you free Bug, Honey, Plant Gathering, Fishing, and Mining points after every quest you go out on and makes accumulating materials much much nicer.

You can actually see the skills armor has to offer before buying the entire set now, as well a lot of armor gives more bonuses and you can upgrade the defense. This will make armor feel like it never really gets obsolete, and you can get armor sets much easier to fill in specific hunt niches (Such as armor that prevents freezing and has a lot of ice resistance for fighting the monsters with Ice attacks), I often tend to hold onto specific sets of armor for a long time if they have skills I enjoy or find useful for specific monsters by just upgrading the defense of it.
Edit: Also I forgot to mention that most armor has slots on them now which you can craft gems for, gems allow you to customize your armor a bit more as they essentially add towards unlocking additional skills.

You will still have to fight certain monsters many times over to get their armor usually, in the Freedom games though I do believe monsters have reduced Health which makes solo hunting them much easier. How much you consider that a grind I can't exactly say for you.

I hope that covers some things, just overall Unite does make things a lot easier on the player and makes armor gathering much more fun. I hope that answered some of your questions and helps you to join into the wonderful Monster Hunting world in a manner that actually makes it fun for you.

Actually you answered more than 7 videos 5 reviews have and more than I expected to hear from one person. This is pretty much what I was hoping for actually, see I don't mind Grind, but when it's MMO style grind (I hate MMOs) where it's a 5% item drop rate on a monster and it takes 16 twinke skins to make 1 part of the 7 part twinke armor set that becomes un-fun.

But what you've said basically shot down my worries, I saw a vid on youtube from Classic Game Room that reviews Tri but he didn't really go much into that info so while the guy sold me on the game, he also left me confused after I had stopped and thought about it. You know how you can get hyped into a game before you really consider it right?

The review if you're interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUj_A7TL9fk

Edit: Also thanks SamuelT for the added advice, I'm grateful
