Monster Hunter Wilds - I'm shocked!

I have never really liked Monster Hunter games. I never understood the appeal of grinding the same monster fights that are more tedious than anything else, in order to farm gear that provides marginal upgrades in defenses and damage. The irony is that on paper this should be my thing, as a long time MMORPG player that gameplay loop is kind of the thing we do. Except MH games always felt bad to me about it. Even farming gear and going back to older/easier monsters didn't make me feel strong and that's really what I want out of a grinding game. I have to feel strong by the end of it.

The last Monster Hunter game I buckled down to put actual hours into was World, and while it was pretty and cool looking, it suffered the same problems that I just didn't enjoy.

To be honest I was flat out going to skip Wilds, but since Civ 7 and Avowed turned out to be wastes of time imo, I figured I'd give MH one....more....try....

And son of a ***** if I don't really like this game.

What in the fuck happened? How? The core gameplay is the same, farm monsters for parts to make gear that provides marginal upgrades. Except that I enjoy it this time.

Okay there are some very big changes that have pulled me into Wilds more than your typical MH game. Namely the story and the characters are quite fun, the character creator in particular let me create Tifa Lockhart so....I mean that's at LEAST a 6/10 right there. But on top of that Wilds introduces a couple of systems and changes that really reduce the potential boredom.

Number 1: The mount and auto run system. When you accept a quest most of the time you can hop on your mount and it'll auto run to where the monster is and you never have to think about it. But as a bonus you can look around and gather materials like bugs and honey and mushrooms while run on the mount. Which vastly reduces the thought behind having to prep for hunts, you'll gather materials on the fly and it's super easy to make a quick detour to kill beasts for a bunch of meat to keep your supply up.

Number 2: The fucking wound system is amazing. As you damage a monster you can see bleeding wounds on their body, and by focusing those wounds you'll break parts of the monster off and knock it down. But not only does it cause damage, knock down the monster for more damage, it also gives you pieces of the monster automatically. Which means by the time you beat the monster and carve it at the end of the hunt you'll have most of the parts needed to craft everything that monster can offer you. I've not yet had to fight a monster more than 2 or 3 times in order to fully craft a set of it's armor for me, my felyne and weapons if possible.

The other thing notable is that there aren't any filler quests in the game that I can tell. I remember Worlds had several side quests that basically asked you to gather random herbs, or bugs, and didn't tell you where that shit was so finding it was frustrating and annoying especially since these missions didn't even require combat. Wilds has yet to provide me any side quests beyond one side quest to catch a fish. The focus on the story has been very helpful in keeping the games pace rolling and the quick gathering of materials makes preperations so much easier to deal with.

So color me shocked when I started playing this game last night and before I realized it 5 hours had gone by.

Well there you go. It's a game that works for you and found something enjoyable. I couldn't get into the franchise for similar reasons and usually couldn't get a buddy to join in.

The main change about Wilds in the story department is that there....is a story. Which yeah, it's a pretty big change alright lol. All the prior games had a figleaf of a story and mainly relied heavily on the amazing gameplay.

But yeah basically monhun gameplay is a ton like souls gameplay so people like it for the same reasons. You know how like in souls you don't always get the drop from enemies and gotta farm em a bit (or a lot in some cases) until they drop the gear you want, it's like that, but with bosses.

Another cool thing is that this is an rpg with no leveling up. You start at lvl 1, and stay at lvl 1 throughout the entire game. Only thing that changes is your gear and your experience as a gamer. As a Jrpg fanatic I find that concept immensely appealing for a Jrpg.

In my experience, whenever I started getting tired of monhun, switching to a new weapon would make all the difference. I always start with the longswords cause they're the OG weapon I picked when I started the series on PSP ages ago so they feel like coming home, but eventually you always wanna spice things up. This time around they actually made the most boring weapon, sword and shield, actually cool too by making swords into flails. So yeah basically if you start to feel like the game's repetitive, just try a new weapon.

Have they fixed the insane amount of faffing around between hunt from world? I just hated stuff like having to go trough lobby and waiting 60 sec, even when playing single player. I'd much rather just have the open world and be able to start hunt right there and just keep going once they're done. Also constantly doing the cooking and stuff. I just felt like I was spending more time on pointless stuff than on actually hunting monster, which was fun when they weren't damage sponge.

Also the cost of switching weapon was really annoying, cause you essentially picked one at the start and never switched again, which made things very stale.

World wasn't really like that with lobbies and Wilds is keeping in that tradition. You can take on new missions while out in the world by talking to your handler too, no need to go back to base. I always played these games solo so the lobby aspect never entered into the picture.

As for switching weapons, once you play enough you will have spare mats, and you can also use that to cover different elements cause some weapons have varied trees of upgrading that specialize in certain types of damage, so if you're seeking to cover a different element, might as well go into a different weapon too instead of just upgrading a second version of the weapon you used up to that point.

I know tons of people feel a sunken cost fallacy when trying a new weapon, but you actually will end up realizing that your knowledge as a gamer goes a lot further than just the stats of your weapon.

FFFUUUCCCKKK and I still need to finish FF7 Rebirth, and going on a vacation soon.

Because goddamn it, I need to reawaken my art of bonking with hammer

It's that time of the year where all the good games are coming out simultaneously haha. I'm like 100 hours into kingdom come 2 and the end is nowhere in sight so I'm just gonna finish that gem before I dive neck deep here. What can you do.

But yeah, bonk with hammer is definitely important.

The real question is it a better story then Monster Hunter Stories 2, cause that had a pretty banger story.

I don't expect it to be, cause yeah those games are classic Jrpgs where story is a focus. But I'm open to being wrong haha.

On second thought, maybe it is better to wait until it's more optimzied on pc
Oh yeah I'm on ps5, pc port is terribad apparently. Runs fine on ps5 though.
