So, I bought Monster Tale a week ago knowing only that it's made by the same people who made Henry Hatsworth (one of the great, unsung gems of the current generation which I cannot recommend highly enough) and it wasn't until two days ago that I got the chance to begin playing it. The game definitely lived up to my expectations, delivering bright, colorful characters and settings and perfectly paced gameplay. For those who haven't heard of it, it's a metroidvania on the top screen and a monster raising sim on the bottom. You play a girl named Ellie who finds a monster named Chomp and sets out to free the monster kingdom from the tyranny of five evil children. Ellie gains new abilities (like a Megaman X style wall jump) from statues and Chomp levels up RPG style from defeating enemies, eating food and interacting with various toys to gain new forms and abilities. Between the two, you almost always have a new gameplay element to experiment with. It's not nearly as difficult as Hatsworth was (Hatsworth on gentleman mode could be a challenge even for veterans of NES era difficulty), but it's still challenging enough to be worth a shot even if you're already experienced with the genre.
What I like the most about this game is that it's just a really solidly put together title for all ages that doesn't rely on an established IP or merely reiterate the conventions of its genre without trying anything new, and games like this seem to be pretty scarce these days.
Has anyone else here been playing it and, if so, what what are everyone's thoughts?
