That's basically asking for your car & house keys, and saying "but we won't steal anything or look at anything inappropriate."

I'd jsut pretend I'm a hermit who has no online accounts.
you have to give your name, and therefore if they search it in facebook or myspace it would show up your account, and then you wouldn't get the job, because you lied.

this is a ridiculously stupid idea. i can see that yes, giving them the URLs is fine, but not your password, so they can access everything.

This is flat-out illegal. Period. This is an invasion of privacy of the highest order. It's like asking for the keys to my house, or my car. I have no idea what they'd plan to even do with those passwords.

I'm not even comfortable with them viewing all my various Internet accounts (it's not their business, they're hiring people to WORK and the interview should be based around that), let alone giving them access to pose as me online. I hope the people who came up with this law get every last dollar sued from them. This is basically identity theft (or could very easily become it).

First thought: No way that's legal.

Second thought: Shit, hopefully I don't need to find work in Montana soon...

Why would they need to give them there password as well?

That's just stupid.
With a google account you can look at your search history, they just want to make sure you're a) not looking at creepy shit or b) stupid enough to not delete your history.

I see no problem with this. I only have a google and escapist account, I delete my google history and don't post creepy shit here so I'm in the clear. Also I live in Australia *displays buttocks*

Something deep inside me started twitching involuntarily when I read "provide all user names and passwords". That is horrific security practice no matter how you look at it, and almost certainly violates either the candidates' legal rights or their agreements with the places they have accounts with - most places stipulate that you don't share account access details.

Saying they won't look at anything they aren't allowed to is horseshit as well - once you've handed over your password you have no way to know what they've accessed, so it's entirely unaccountable and unenforceable, meaning abuse will be inevitable. The way to prevent anyone abusing the system isn't to make a rule that no-one is allowed to abuse the system, it's to design a system such that the fuckers don't have an opportunity for abuse (ideal defence) or at least that if they do, that it'll be recorded (adequate-ish defence).

I'd tell them to go eat a dick. Alternatively spend a while setting up fake accounts around the place, and setting them up so that anyone looking through them to check up on my "moral fibre" would find themselves perusing a never-ending torrent of goatse and other eyeball-scarring images. Maybe try and work in some slash fiction sites too. Whatever horrible shit I could make them look at, that wouldn't go so far as to be illegal. Either way I don't get the job, but Plan B is so much sweeter.
