Moon is an engaging and thoroughly compelling science fiction drama which went almost completely unnoticed when released last year. It won a few awards, most notably the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, but even that is hardly likely to attract a great deal of attention. It made very little money at the box office, which is a real shame, because this is one of the best and most interesting science fiction films of recent years.

Made on a budget of a mere $5 million dollars, the premise is a simple one. Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is coming to the end of his three-year contract mining for helium-3 on the Moon. His only companion this whole time has been a computer called GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey), whose job is to help Sam in any way he can. Over time, however, he begins hallucinating, and things on the base get progressively stranger, leading him to question not only what is going on, but who he actually is.

To say more would be to ruin an extremely tightly-written and intelligent plot. It's a little confusing at times, although this was doubtless the intention; and while there are a few holes in it, they only really become noticeable after the credits have rolled. The key to the film is Sam Rockwell's performance, however. Having previously played Zaphod Beeblebrox in the Hitchhiker's Guide film and Guy the Redshirt in Galaxy Quest, he gets a chance to really flex his acting muscles in this film, and he is remarkable. For about 90% of the film he is the only one on camera (other than GERTY), so to say the film is driven by his performance is an understatement. He gives an enormous amount of depth and humanity to what is a very tragic character, an extremely different role from the aforementioned ones. He deserved to have been nominated for an Oscar for this.

What few flaws the film does have are easily overlooked. Fans of science fiction will doubtless be able to spot numerous elements borrowed from other films of the genre, which can either be interpreted as homage or the film being derivative. Considering the overall tone of the film, it seems more likely to be the former, as it is clearly intended as a throwback to the classics of the genre. One very minor, nitpicky complaint is that it would have been nice to have let the sequences on the surface of the Moon remain silent, but this does not affect the enjoyability of the film.

Moon is one of those films that may not have been successful on first release, but will probably become a beloved cult classic in the years to come. It borrows elements from such science fiction classics as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner and Alien and fuses them together into one of the most original and interesting films of the genre in recent years. It is an extremely refeshing change from the loud, noisy, CG-driven films which most characterise modern science fiction, and is all the more rewarding for it, being driven by what used, and ought, to define the genre: big ideas, not big explosions.

OK. That's nice.

In all seriousness I ddo want to watch this movie. Is it all hockey or ridiculous? Would my negative skeptical energy make it so that I wouldn't want to watch it? That's the impression I got watching the trailers, though you're erm, analysis has convinced me.

I know the movie is currently on Netflix's Instant View and is one I love to watch ever since I saw it in my Film Interp class as the teacher's #1 movie of the last 10 years. I've also seen the movie pop up on Starz from time to time, as for an actual hard copy of the movie I haven't seen any yet.

Moon was freakin' awesome. Everybody, watch it right now!

Best movie we ever rented from "Red Box" (self-service rental kiosk thingy). Also, the only movie we had to pay an extra ~$20 for, because they claimed we never returned it. I was like "Dammit, I wish I really hadn't returned it. That was a freakin' awesome movie that everybody should watch right now." Isn't it directed by David Bowie's kid or something like that?

Oddly enough, yes. Evidently Duncan Jones decided to take quite a different career path from his father.

Like I said, it's kind of a throwback to old, classic sf, but in a good way. It plays everything seriously, but it doesn't seem silly like so much old sf does. Think of it as a high-quality sf movie from the 80s, enhanced with modern effects, and you have a good idea of what it's like.

great review. I saw this and it was immediately cemented into my top 10 favourites.

oh and how hard is it writing about this film when you don't want to give anything away? I wrote one myself and read it like the rain man making sure i wasn't spoiling it lol

Easily the best science fiction film from last year. Hopefully, it'll go on to be a cult hit like Blade Runner or 2001.

It's a very good movie with some good engaging story and some intresting acting and interactions and events...

I think the reason it drifted by so quickly with so little notice was the lack of big budget special effects beyond the most obvious bit of special effects, other than that the special effects present struck me very heavily of being remanicent of, if slightly more computery than, 1999 and other 70s-80s space shows.

I only caught the last 30 minutes or so (shame, since now the ending is spoiled), but what I saw, I liked. Good to know it's on Netflix so I can watch it from start to finish.

It's an excellent movie. I watched it with my girlfriend who didn't want to see it and by the end she was "shhh"ing me, she was that engaged in it.
A deeply engaging film with the workings of genius, both from actors Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey and from director Duncan Jones.

This puppy's been in my movie collection since it came out.
Seen it about 3 or 4 times now, it still amazes me.

Rockwell is brilliant in this movie, no doubt about it.
Good to see other people discovering it, spread the word, this is SF at it's best.
(well, next to Bladerunner that is)

I have zero qualms about grouping Moon in with Blade Runner in terms of quality sci-fi.

you might benefit from looking at the code some other reviewers have used in their reviews for pictures/headings etc
I've been told this before, but honestly, I don't particularly like using pictures. I know how to embed them, but I don't think pictures really add much to the review, unless I copy specific frames from the DVD, upload them to the internet, and then link them here. And, in a lot of cases, I can't be bothered to do that, especially with a review like this one, which I wrote in about 15 minutes just after seeing the film on TV. And if I want to include pictures in spite of all that, it's pretty hit-and-miss what I can find on Google Images. I avoid pictures for the same reason I don't tend to give scores: I think they can often distract from the actual review.

Great review and really well set out. I would have liked more on the actual plot but I suppose I actually have to see it.

Agree it was great movie, the kind that gives me hope that all movies don't have to cost insane amounts of money to tell a story, especially an off-world science fiction story. Your review was very good too. It gave enough information to make those who haven't seen it want to without giving anyway anything, and reminded those of us who have seen it how great it was.
