Them's fightin' words, mister!

I hope this is indeed a sign of ESO going F2P. I have been waiting for that for a while, since I would like to try it out but I will not pay a monthly sub for a game unless it is utterly amazing.
Why not buy the game cheap during a steam sale or Amazon or such, get the free month of sub that comes with it, play it to your hearts content for a month and then decide whether it's worth continuing or not? You can easily get $20-30 worth of enjoyment out of ESO in a month and if you like it then you'll help keep the game alive instead of waiting for it to fail like a vulture circling its prey like all the other naysayers.
Maybe. If it has been on a Steam sale yet then I missed it. I'm just not sure it is even worth that much, from what I have read about it. MMOs usually aren't. TBH I'd much rather see TES6 happen.

I think it was half off during the winter sale, so maybe keep an eye out for it next time there's a steam sale.

Also, don't trust what you've read about it, especially if it's from the launch period or beta. A lot has changed and improved, and a lot of people seem to enjoy bashing this game even if they aren't well informed enough to actually discuss why they hate it so much.

Admittedly, i'm biased in the other direction since I really like ESO, so take that for what you will. But I think it's definitely worth trying out if you can find it on sale, even if you only ever play it for a month. ESO also has a really friendly and nice community in game (albeit relatively small compared to some MMOs).

Hm, I see. I will keep an eye out for the next sale then. I try not to pre-judge any game too much but ESO certainly seemed in the few weeks after launch not to have really captured the feel of an Elder Scrolls game.

If you'd asked me at launch, I would have said, "no, I want to recommend this game, but it's just not there." Now? There's certainly worse ways to spend 15 bucks. If you like the borderline MMO nature of The Elder Scrolls franchise anyway, or enjoy MMOs in general, it's certainly worth looking at.
I see. I am a little concerned it will feel like any other MMO (and they mostly do feel largely the same) with an Elder Scrolls skin rather than genuinely feeling like an Elder Scrolls game with more people in it, which is what I would really like in an Elder Scrolls MMO.

I think that you will be surprised how well it captures the spirit of an elder scrolls game. Sure, you have to select a class and are stuck with it from then on, but the way the skill system functions allows for a ton of customization. Your class doesn't restrict your weapon or armor choices, you can mix and match that however you like. Any class can make a reasonable tank, healer or DPS if you build them properly that way.

The world is split into leveling zones, so it's not a completely open world like Skyrim was. The zones are huge, though and while there are some level differences within a zone, you can mostly explore wherever you want within a zone if you're in the right approximate level range. Quests don't follow the typical MMO "hub" format, you have to actually go out and explore to find them. Exploration is also encouraged by finding Skyshards (3 skyshards gives you one skill point), lorebooks (which raise your mage's guild rank) and other random books, hidden chests, treasure maps, resource nodes (which can often be sneakily hidden) and some other hidden goodies. The world is also GORGEOUS and that also makes the world worth exploring.

The crafting systems are also extremely customizeable and stay true to the Elder Scrolls spirit (for instance, alchemy is ported almost verbatim from Skyrim). There are 6 crafting skills: woodworking (bows, staves, and shields), blacksmithing (heavy armour and weapons), clothing (light and medium armor), enchanting, alchemy, and provisioning (cooking and brewing). I could talk for a LONG time about the nuances of the crafting system but I won't for the sake of brevity.

In combat, the game still uses the standard health, magicka, stamina resource pools. You can use your stamina for skills or blocking, dodging, etc. Sneaking is also in the game and is very similar to skyrim and consumes stamina while sneaking.

In addition to this, they have announced that in coming updates they will be adding a Justice System which will add killing NPCs and pickpocketing and stealing from NPCs as well as a bounty system and punishment system. They will eventually add the dark brotherhood and thieves guild. They will also be adding SPELL CRAFTING. And their demo for it looks AMAZING. No ETA on when that's coming but sometime this year.

I highly recommend watching the Quakecon presentation from July of last year. I will embed the timestamp for the spellcrafting below (because it's so awesome!) [EDIT: Timestamp didn't work, but Spell crafting is at 53mins] but I really recommend watching the whole thing if you want to decide whether this game is for you. Some of the things have already been added but most are still coming up.

If you want me to elaborate in more detail about specific aspects of ESO and how it is similar/differs to previous Elder Scrolls games, feel free to send me a pm and we can discuss it there. I've played Oblivion and Skyrim and bits of Morrowind prior to ESO.

Well, that's quite the information dump, haha. Thank you though, it does make me feel a little more optimistic about ESO. I probably will give it a try when it is next on sale.

The leveling content is pure TES. It does have the same bad habit as Dragon Age Inquisition, where it gives you a bunch of checklists at the outset. Though it does hide those off in the achievements menu, instead of dropping them in your face and seriously undermining the exploration. But, beyond that it turns you loose in fairly large maps, and lets you wander around.

There's a weird disconnect from the modern Elder Scrolls games in that zones and enemies do have set levels, and those will increase over time, but there's also a lot of stuff to find by wandering off quest markers, finding stuff to poke, and seeing what other weirdnesses you can find.

What's rather amazing is, once you advance through the leveling content for a given faction, you unlock the other two zones at suggestively higher levels (part of what the Champion System is streamlining). This is the leveling content for those factions, with a couple major tweaks. Everything is Vet ranked (effectively level 50) so for those zones you can go anywhere and do zones in whatever order appeals to you. You do need to finish a checklist of major content to advance from the second to third faction's zones. But at this level, the content really does become the standard go anywhere do anything. Where a Starter zone in your first faction would be level 1-16, in the Silver zone it'll all be Vet Rank 1. Meaning, freedom to explore. Also, because it's very high level content, and because a lot of vet players gravitate towards PvP in Cyrodil or PvE in Craglorn, these zones are very sparsely populated, feeding back into the feel of a lone adventurer wandering through the world, with the option of finding friends and bringing them along.

Also, werewolves and vampires are playable... so there's that. It's a bit arduous to get them... and there is no way in hell I'm running another level 12 through the Hircine quest. But, those are actual options in game.

Ironically, that's one of the biggest departures from Skyrim's stamina system. :p

These possibilities are purely speculation.

1. EBGames is up to something dodgy. They most likely bought the copies of the game along with the game cards in $US and will likely be refunded the same amount, in $US. However, suppose their copies were bought at $45US ($45AUD) and now refunded at $45US ($54AUD).

2. Due to a lack of retailer interest starting around 2008 and recently the ease and lower cost of digital purchasing, the retail PC game market in Australia has flatlined. They only have themselves to blame.

Captcha - best seller
(captcha is being sarcastic)

EDIT - Steven Bogos is most likely correct.
It's far more likely that it's getting pulled because the US may be region locking their Subscription version, but an Asian English market (eg Singapore) may going/launching as F2P because Asian MMO players don't like Subscription games very much.

Australia always gets shafted with MMORPG's because nobody wants to operate a data center in Australia. It's either play the US version with horrible lag and miserable players, or play the Asian version and have everyone chatter around you in something other than English.

Australia has really strict (IE: very consumer friendly) consumer protection laws. They have worked in our favour when developers have tried to pull shady shit, or sell us broken games (IE: EA was forced to give Australians full refunds for SimCity, as it didn't work as advertised on launch).
Seems like living in a nanny state CAN have some advantages...

Makes you think Australia might have something against videogames. Oh wait, IT DOES!
Only the government does. The people actually have no problem at all with videogames
