I'm a tabletop gamer. (Often not literally, usually me and my brothers sit in a circle and play "tabletop" games, but, you get the picture.) Tabletop gaming is one of the most extraordinary entertainment markets out there, with files being bought and sold over the internet quite a lot, actually. People that wouldn't be given time of day in stores are selling a lot on sites like, say, RPGNow.com.
Looking at this, I think of something; why not have gaming be more like this? Say, every time a game is released it releases it's basic engine onto the market - preferably, in purest form, so it's very malleable and you can do most everything with it. You can, for a small price, edit it up into a game of your very own making, and drop it into a market for whatever price you feel like, and people determine if it's worth buying - effectively, XBLA or Steam, but open to any submissions - be them mods, games made with the same engine, or completely original games. In your opinion, would this be a good idea?
