He is god in the comedy department as far as I am concerned. No cheap jokes either, smart, thoughtfull and just plain good.
I can't wait for Brutal legend (allthough I secretly dream of Psychonauts 2).
The gamingindustry would profit from more like him, even though I think that he is a bit overlooked by people who dissmiss him as complicated and "talky".

ok, that is pretty pointless if you haven't played the game...and it is talky....

This is just a small fanboy shout out. Take it for what it is, I am at work, and bored.

Thats the thing though, the games industry actually profits very little from his games. They are amongst the least successful good games ever made. I too wish more games had the variety that Mr Shafers games offer, but the fact is that its not what consumers as a whole are buying.

I wouldn't say he was complicated, talky, or even the master of comedy in games. I found Psychonauts to play like an average Pixar film in terms of plot and laughs (though it was still enjoyable). Where he benefits is the art direction, which whilst they are appealing to those of us who like a bit of variety, actually end up alienating most of its audience. Add to that the fact that the gameplay mechanics are hardly hugely different, and you start to see that whilst Mr Shafer sure has a good imagination and grasp of art direction, he's hardly gamings saviour, or anywhere near it.

That's just my opinion though

What we need is for more people like him (I know there are people like that) and have them stand up and make their voices heard!
Something like this I meant.

When it comes to games I don't think there are that many more in his genre of comedy. I would compare him to Kevin Smith when it comes to writing scripts.

I know he doesn't make blockbuster games, even though his games are very good. The point I am trying to make, disregard the fanboyism, is that he makes games from a story point of view. Might be this I like. I don't know anymore.

Erik Wolpaw did some writing for Psychonauts. He also worked on the Old Man Murray website and the game "Portal" which did quite well and spawned a few comedy "bemes" of some note. So there is at least one more comparable person working in games.

Ron Gilbert is also currently working on his DeathSpank game.

very true!

Portal is also a good example of a "funny" multi-selling game

Well the thing i like most about a game is the story and psychonauts was filled with the most humorous interesting story and most people don't care about the story in the game but that might change with his new game Brutal Legends if that game sells good he might open the gates for that kind of writing in a game for more people.
