If you haven't modified a single thing on your "compy" in 7 years, then yes, it should be at the end of it's shelf life. What I'm saying is that the rest of us who have new, up to date hardware shouldn't be penalised because of the medievalist attitudes of what appears to be quite a few people.

Using windows XP here and I might get windows 7 in the next few years. Hopefully there'll be a way to mod games to make them run on XP, if not then I guess I get to wait.

While I heard that there's things you can buy to make it more like windows 7 I shouldn't have to pay to make windows work.

Firstly thank you for the link, I can use that at work to upgrade the appearance of the windows 8 machines to windows 7. Secondly aside from booting faster and running better on old machines (as proven by the computer at the reception desk) there's really nothing new I can use. I think I'd rather spend the money on windows 7 and save myself the work of fixing windows 8. Booting faster isn't really an advantage since I start my computer and go into the kitchen to get some coffee, it could take 5 minutes to boot and it'd still be fine.

For the first thing read the last parts of my post. Boot time isn't an issue because I hit the power button and walk off to do other things. As for the rest, it's a matter of principle. They shouldn't sell something that people need to fix when they buy. That's just bad business practice.

I don't think that your complaint of

is the line coming from anyone else. With three mouseclicks, you can set it to windows 7 appearance whilst updating the RAM usage and removing any bloat.

I hope you also got from that message that I'm an old-fashioned person, so even with all your arguments in favor of it can't overrule my preference for older things. I like old things that are proven to work over newer things that haven't even been used a year.

But that's the thing, you're not being penalized. You can still play at ultra-high-def-swanky-realistic graphics, the game doesn't stop you from doing so. Heck, the amount of effort companies put into providing low-end options won't even hurt your experience. If they lost time/money doing it, they wouldn't do it. So there's no reason not to support older video cards, unless you want to drop out half the market. There's nothing wrong with a company allowing for older harder. There is something wrong with complaining about a practice which helps keep devs in business and has no negative consequences for you, personally.

And frankly, if I were to buy a brand new computer right now, with all the bells and whistles, it had better last me at the very least 8 years. I would hope it would last 10-15 years. Considering I had a four year old computer which ran all the new games at all but the highest settings, and that computer was mediocre when I bought it, I would say the current situation works just fine for the vast majority of us.

Why would it not? My PC from last year is still running new games on Ultra, or "very high" on three screens.

Spending money at a certain point will get you performance for a long while. You make it sound like buying a new computer now won't last you a long time. And it will, if you spend correctly.

Does Deus Ex run on W95? If not, it bloody well should. And on Windows 3.1. Because Ion Storm should totally cater for those guys too.

It really does not matter what any of us think is right, only what we pay for. If a significant number of users don't buy games that don't support XP than the publishers will make sure their games support XP. Otherwise they will move on with the times and the technology.

It is not such a bad thing. It is harder to support multiple platforms and you can't utilize the latest technologies.

Windows 7 is great and Windows XP is over 10 years old. Time to move on folks, XP is already the longest lived Windows platform I can think of.
