Morrowind Essentials

So I recently just got Morrowind (finally) and figuring that the game is very well regarded by lots of people on the site though I'd ask for more or less the essentials. I'm already planning on installing the new overhaul mod that was promoted here like a week ago, but I was wondering if there's any other mods that are more or less required (like bug mods or whatever).

Also if anyone has any general tips on how to get the most out of the game I'd appreciate them (keep it spoiler free though). Something along the lines of like (to use Oblivion as an example): don't get to the first oblivion gate than dick around for 30 levels cause all your soldiers will get 1 shot.

For your first runthrough, just go plain combat. Magic is much more difficult and from my experience, stealthier builds aren't very effective. Pick a weapon, a type of armor, and then security, block (if planning on one-handed weapons), and one or two magic types (mysticism gives you levitate) to use on occasion as your main skills.

Outside Seyda Neen, you'll find a wizard named Tarhiel who you can get an enchanted sword from. There's also the Sword of White Woe in one of the Balmora guard towers. Either of those are great starter weapons. If you have Tribunal installed, then there's a chance you'll be attacked by assassins when you sleep. Their armor is pretty good, and each set sells for a lot if you don't want them.

In the starting office, there's a really expensive plate. If you take it and immediately drop it, the guards will reprimand you but nothing else. You can then pick the plate back up and sell it for a nice bit of gold to start. Also, join the Mage's Guild early, because their travel service is good and very cheap.

Past that, just know that most enemies will be able to kill you quickly until you get a few levels and better gear (no level scaling like Oblivion). If it looks slightly tough, then it probably is.

Past that, have fun. If you somehow run out of things to do (you won't), then the Tamriel rebuilt mod is like an expansion in itself.

I got Morrowind a little back and all I have to say is that beware. In this game even a Mudcrab will kill you at the beginning. That is all I know. I have never been able to keep playing. No Idea why though.

edit: wait, what overhaul?

I don't know how the overhaul may have changed things but Alchemy is massively useful - you don't really need many of the other schools of magic when you can make your own protection potions and, more importantly, levitation/flight potions. Also - arrows are very useful for dealing with cliff racers.

Morrowind Overhaul- Sounds and Graphics 3.0. Basically, it upgrades all of the graphical aspects of the game and also includes several useful performance and stability tweaks, all in one easy to install package.

Anyway, to the op: No, there really aren't any other essential mods, as the overhaul contains all of the essential bugfix mods. As far as other advice goes, build a warrior type character for your first character, and don't worry if you aren't able to do something yet, even if it's a seemingly low level thing. Just come back to it later.

It kind of needs to lose the dice roll system and cliff racers then the game would be amazing. Oh, and a proper quest log. While the journal was thematically more correct, it was not good for that kind of game.

Caldera (which can be reached by taking the Stilt Strider from Sayda Neen to Balmora, and then taking the Mages Guild teleporter to Caldera) has two things. The first is a full set of Master-level Alchemy gear at the top of the Mages Guild tower (accessable from the first floor). The second is the Scamp on the second floor of Ghorak Manor. He has 5,000 gold, and will buy most items for 100% of their value.

If you can, find a paralyze weapon as quickly as possible. You'd be amazed how much that breaks combat. At least, that's the way I remember it. Haven't played Morrowind in a long time, but I remember having a paralyze sword and a poison sword and just alternating between them a lot in combat.

I second Morrowind Overhaul 3.0. It really does make Morrowind look like a game from 2010 or so.

what a fortunate coincidence. just picked up morrowind a couple of days ago myself!

I'm really getting into it - but one thing is pissing me off, and thats the foot travel speed. its frustratingly slow.
I'm hoping there's a mod for that.

Need some advice though I'm new to the whole modding thing - I have a shit computer (but its good enough to run morrowind yeee) so I'm not sure how to go about installing them and going about them. If someone could just give me some quick instructions that would be sweet.

I'm kinda in the same boat. My computer is good enough to play most modern games at decent fps but morrowind seems to be glitching on me with the overhaul mod installed. For some reason my fps is really low for a game this old, and that's even with everything at the lowest settings in the overhaul. Like it was 10 outside before I turned off distant lands, and now its jumped up to ~25-30ish outside. I also keep getting these weird lag spikes on loading screens. Gotta keep tinkering with it until I get it to a nice stable 30+ outside.
