I have never played Morrowind in my life. I have played Oblivion though and played it a lot. From what I hear, Morrowind is as enjoyable as Oblivion, if not more. From that I conclude it is worth $4. Jump in, play it and enjoy the next 5 months of your life playing nothing else, because that's as much time as I've spent playing Oblivion and Morrowind seems to be a lot bigger.

Actually there's a good question; is Morrowind compatible with modern PCs (mine uses Windows 7)? I'm just wondering whether I should invest in it.

Absolutely. By itself $4 is a steal but once you get some fan made mods in it the game is soooooo much better. I bought Morrowind when it first came out and I still go back and play it now and then. It was my first experience with the elder scrolls series and I still like it a little more then oblivion

So my local thrift store has a couple baskets of CDs, DVDs, PC games. I'm going through it the other day and I find a factory-sealed copy of Morrowind for 3.99 USD.

Here's where I'm coming from...
-I like fantasy RPGs.
-I've never played an Elder Scrolls game, or any Bethesda RPG for that matter.
-I'm notably interested in Skyrim based on what I've seen, though I'd like to know more about what I'm getting into before I spend money on it.

Here's what I'd like to know...
-Is Morrowind still fun and playable by modern gaming standards?
-Will it run on a newer PC without major complications?
-Is Morrowind a good way to get aquainted with Bethesda RPGs or would it be better for me to seek out an old copy of Oblivion or Fallout 3?

I don't really need to know if Morrowind is worth $4; what I really need to know is, based on where I'm coming from, is Morrowind worth my time?

Yeah, in that context, the subject heading is a tad misleading in that context, but it got you here didn't it? Let's discuss.
It's a good intro game to Bethesda's works. You can hit up tesnexus.com for a ton of mods and forums where you'll get any answers you need, too.

For your first question, hell yes. In fact Morrowind is still arguably better then a lot of the newer games I have played since despite it being fairly old now. Even the graphics are still quite good in with the other worldly sort of feel to them. It should definitely run without complications as it does on my pc which although not top of the line any more is only about 1 and a half years old. As for the last question, I'll go with sort of. I mean tbh it seems that bethesda is moving further away from the old school style RPG that they used to do so well and are trying to appeal to a wider audience by making their games a bit less specialized. With that in mind it could be that Oblivion would be a better indicator of what Skyrim will be like then Morrowind would be. However that being said Morrowind on it's own is a great game and is definitely worth at least a shot. Then if you like it you can play some Oblivion too before Skyrim comes out to see if you like the direction it is heading in.

The thing with Morrowind is that its gameplay by modern standards is horrid. Combat is unintuitive and not explained all that well, and the skills can quickly turn into a grind to get them up to the highest ranks.

But the reason so many people praise Morrowind isn't its gameplay - it's got a fantastic atmosphere, a very solid storyline, and a metric ton of customization abilities. Oblivion's raw combat gameplay was simplified and more modern, but but Morrowind beats it out on almost everything else. Writing is better, the world design is so much more enjoyable, skills are better planned, and quests are generally more enjoyable.

So for that cheap a price, yes, definitely get it. But if you find the gameplay isn't to your satisfaction, look up some mods and find ones that alter the combat to suit your tastes more.

YES. You should mod the crap out of it, though. There's a Morrowind 2011 mod pack floating around somewhere that is worth installing if your computer can take it, as is Tamriel Rebuilt, especially if you're a mage. Which leads me to my next point of advice - play a mage. Stealth and melee sucks in Morrowind, but the exploration aspect is too good to pass up.
Morrowind 2011 disappointed me hugely, buggered my GPU for no particularly huge gain. Morrowind is basically a better oblivion with a rubbish combat system.

The combat is terrible, and the graphics haven't really aged well (though I'm sure you could fix this at least partially with mods) but aside from that, Morrowind is a fanastic game and certainly worth at least a try.

Yeah, any graphics mod makes basically any computer cry haha. Problem is that Morrowind is not optimized for modern graphics, so it's very inefficient.

Morrowind is brilliant. I used to play it before I had internet completely without any mods and I had so much fun. Hundreds of hours of immersive fun. Go get it.

I'd definitely recommend the game if you're interested. Morrowind is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It has an extremely atmospheric and imaginative game world that practically begs to be explored. There's also an extensive amount of backstory and lore if you take the time to speak to NPCs and read the books scattered around the land. In my opinion, $4 is practically a steal for such an immersive game.

However, I feel obligated to mention a few caveats:

Combat is awkward and clumsy by today's standards. Basically whenever you swing a melee weapon or shoot an arrow, the game takes your skill with the weapon and uses it as a "to hit" percentage. For example, a Long Blade skill of 25 means that you'll only score hits with large swords approximately one out of every four tries, while a skill of 75 results in a three out of four success rate.

Magic is even more clumsy than melee or ranged combat. Not only will unskilled characters frequently fail to cast spells, but it will still drain your mana (or "magicka" as it's known in the Elder Scrolls universe) bar regardless. Unlike more modern RPGs, magicka does not automatically regenerate in Morrowind. You have to either use a restore magicka potion or rest to regain it. If you decide to create a mage-type character, I'd recommend downloading a magicka regen mod. Just enter "Morrowind magicka regen mod" in Google and check out what the modding community has to offer (while you're at it, check out the other mods as well. The amount of content offered is amazing, from simple bugfixes to new content and graphical overhauls. You can even download entirely new landmasses to explore that rival the size and scope of the original game).

Since it sounds like you have a busy schedule, make sure to watch your time spent playing the game. Once you're hooked, Morrowind has a nasty habit of making the hours fly by. I can't tell you how many times I've fired up the game just to play it an hour or two, only to look at the clock again and suddenly realize four hours have gone by.

Pfft. What's up with the scrubs in this thread saying the combat was bad? Morrowind was brilliant in every way. Even the graphics hold a certain artistic quality to this day.

The only challenge of Morrowind (and it's a challenge I loved by the way) is figuring out what to do. The journal system is not intuitive and on your first playthrough you might not recognize the Blades quests as your primaries.

Still, the game is amazing, I've beaten it start to finish several times. On one playthrough I read every single book I ever picked up. Looking back, I'd say that game was worth $500 to me, not just $5.

Actually, I'm going to go play some now.

It's never too late to get into morrowind. Beware, the game will be very, VERY slow your first go through. Don't be afraid to start a new character if your initial creation doesn't turn out like you had hoped.

Yes, buy it! It was my first RPG. It's darker, so making out creatures is more difficult, which leads to the game being slightly more frightening. The combat's meh, but there are MANY dialogue trees and at least the people conversing don't seem like total morons. People whine about CLIFF RACERS, but I don't see anything wrong with CLIFF RACERS, as they were always fun to kill because they RACE around CLIFFS. Plus, they're about as frightening as Rakks in Borderlands, i.e. Easy to kill with a ranged weapon.

I think Morrowind is fun, but only after the very boring and slow start. There's a LOT of walking and the combat is annoying, but it is deeply immersive and rewards exploration.

It's an incredible game with a gorgeous, immersive world and a good story. Mod the graphics to bring them more up to date and play the hell out of it.

By the way, I like the fact that Morrowind doesn't hold your hand, that you start out on foot and actually have to follow directions and look around and explore. It seems like a steep learning curve at first but is in fact incredibly rewarding. To be wandering the wilderness and find something you never expected - an orc with an unusual request, a vampire lair, a giant stone fortress, a twisted temple, an escaped slave...

Depends...do you have the patience to figure out how skills/ levelling works? Otherwise you are likely to find yourself wondering why you CAN'T HIT a rat or a bug 9 times out of 10. Also: a good character build is essential.

The game is broken as hell though. If you know how (in a matter of hours) you can have like over 2 billion in every stat while still being on Level 1 (not recommended for the speed stat: you'll fly out of the level and crash the game) and that's just using the game mechanics (no cheats).

Morrowind was heaps of fun but Oblivion fixes some of the issues and is an improvement on graphics. Both are fun and are fairly similar and as equally as important to the story line of Skyrim as each other...no significance what so ever lol.

Its an open world RPG, lots of fun, can do lots of stuff and the side quests are normally a lot more interesting than the main story...which seems to be Bethesda's thing xD
