I've just had a rather peculiar experience in TES III Morrowind.

My character is a High-Elf focusing on Alchemy and Destruction...so I joined the Mages Guild and eventually became the Arch-Mage by killing the former one, Trebonius. What...he challenged me to a duel to the death himself...I just obliged ;).

Well guess what...apparently that pisses several NPC's off (their disposition towards you becomes 0, meaning they will refuse you services like trading/barter).

You know why? Some NPC from Balmora Temple said something in the lines of "You're a foreigner...we don't like foreigners...so keep a low profile if you want people to talk to you".

Ever had this experience where for a moment a game sort of "transcends" itself?

I somehow doubt this is the actual reason for the disposition drop. Nice theory though.

Well, I have absolutely no idea how else I could've antagonized them. Everything is fine at first...then I climb the ranks of the Mages Guild and then this. There's really nothing else I did beside that (no stealing/ killing or other foul behaviour).

STALKER Call of Pripyat: I'm neutral with all factions so they don't pay any attention to me. After a blowout inside a 'safe zone' (no fighting in these areas) I decided to tag along with a group of loners. As we were leaving I noticed that three groups of bandits were leaving, along with another 3 groups of loners. Because we were in a safe zone these enemies were gleefully strolling through the grass together away from the protected area. As soon as we left the safe zone ALL FUCKING HELL BROKE LOOSE, everyone who was happily dancing through the field suddenly had AK's trained on each other, grenades and shit went everywhere and a group of bloodsucker decided to join the fry. My neutrality meant I just stood in the middle of this sudden warzone, while everyone was busy killing each other. In the end everyone was dead, including the bloodsuckers, and it just went back to the brief peace in the Zone.

Been a while since I played it but doesn't some people hate the magic guild? So the more you climb the ranks the more they will hate you.
