This upcoming film is co-written and co-produced by Peter Jackson, and directed by longtime Jackson collaborator Christian Rivers.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, the Mortal Engines quartet is a series of novels by Phillip Reeve set in a post apocalyptic future in which urban areas on wheels called Traction Cities hunt each other for resources. This premise is obviously batshit insane and makes no sense if you think about it, but the books were well written enough that I didn't care. I really loved these stories and I sincerely hope the screen adaptation does them justice. (London looks almost exactly how I imagined it, so that's a good start)

From the title I thought this thread would just be about the book or someone asking whether others know them.This though,this is a great surprise.



Jesus Christ I thought this movie was in development hell and would never be made. Based on the old concept art for it they also completely missed the point of Traction cites. This though,this looks FAR more faithful and im actually legitimately excited for it. As long as they don't rename Shrike to Grike (like the American version did for some reason) and keep the four movies names as being the Mortal Engines Quartet instead of the Hungry City Chronicles (again random American name change).

Also sarcasm aside maybe this trailer doesn't sell it well, but I really hope it's just not about a misunderstood,quirky social girl with crazy ideas like fresh water and equality taking on THE MAN!

For a lot of the first book, Hester only wants to get revenge on the person who killed her parents and seriously disfigured her, and was raised for a portion of her life by a malfunctioning cyborg terminator called Shrike. For about 50% of the series as a whole, she's not a very nice person.

Like I said in the Wild West topic for this, I'm set firmly at pessimistic for this. The minute I realised red-bandana-woman was supposed to be Hester and didn't seem to have any trace of the massive facial scar Hester is supposed to have I got rather annoyed. Its not just an accessory, its kind of defined how she sees herself and how she forms relationships. Yet I can't help but notice that in the trailer she's still got both eyes and all of her nose so they've clearly chucked that out out the window. Heaven forbid they have a leading lady who wasn't flawlessly pretty

From what I remember of the books, it was more a deconstruction of Ayn Rand-style capitalism and social Darwinism, combined with a hefty dose of environmentalism.

Not an original message, but I remember the books making up for that with the immortal cyborg Wolverine assassin and the wheeled city-tanks.

Whaaaat? No. The trailer does it fine. The books were about how a world economy based around vicious dog-eat-dog competitiveness - with cities literally cannibalising their weaker competitors - was inherently unsustainable. I think the trailer gets that message across just peachy.

Trailer dropped a few days ago, and to the surprise of no-one they absolutely wussed out on Hester's scar. If they couldn't be bothered doing that disfigurement justice I really do wonder what Shrike is going to look like and if they went with a prettier version of him too

From a marketing standpoint it makes sense to reduce the scar. The lead is going to be plastered across every poster and every commercial aired. They can sort of just smudge the idea of someone feeling disfigured vs. showing it, which solves the problem of people feeling uncomfortable looking at her (I'm ironically guessing that this is a point in the book). While I would like to think the better of everybody, I still think most people tend to respond at face value (hohohohoho) to things they know nothing about.

With that being said, I'll most likely see that movie as I'm digging the weird steam/cyber punk mix they have going on.
