Being badass requires more than just dumb muscle, it requires virtues, like bravery. If you're a dead-inside, death-seeking, or reckless beyond rational logic, you're not brave, you're just a mindless killing machine.
I have to agree with this.
I've noticed a lot of folk refer to some game characters as badass, but in reality their nothing more than selfish massive cunts. Extra Credits did a great deconstruction of Kratos and by second and third they label him, aptly, an 'evil git with no redeeming qualities.'
Characters such as Master Chief, Duke Nukem and Gordon Freeman are all Badass to me because they're out to save the day and do it in the most amazing way possible with no questions asked.
Also, inb4 John Marston is badass, because he's not. He's a whiny ***** who works for the government and everyone else he meets despite them constantly lying to him, while his family has been kidnapped. Badass would be not doing any of those tasks, but rather tracking his family before the agents realise he has gone rogue, much like Arnie in Commando. But that wouldn't really work with the redemption aspect of the story...
