Most artists release a work that draws confusion. People wonder, "Hey, this is NOT the consistant awesome I expected from so-and-so. What happened?"

Have any artists only tickled your expectations? Have any artists released a seemingly inconsistant work that you disagree with?

Author, band, painter-- any type of artist is applicable.

For example, Anberlin (a band) recently released a new album. I liked the momentum their previous albums had built, convincing me this new album would be top quality.

It was a luke-warm disappointment for me because they exceeded the boundary between corny and artistically thoughtful. Their new songs make me think of enlightened angst.

Anyway, that's my example. What are your thoughts?

I've liked most of Anberlin's stuff.

Bands like Lucky Boys Confusion and Muse have yet to disappoint me, though! =D

My favorite band is the Byrds, up until Sweetheart of the Rodeo, where with most of the original members gone the band went from folk-rock completely into country.

Boston certainly went down the drain after initial success.

Red Hot Chili Peppers.
One Hot Minute just wasn't as funky as everything else really. Aeroplane was good, and it had some decent tracks, but it just wasn't really as lighthearted and bouncy as everything else.

I think a lot of it has to do with artist burnout really.

The latest Opeth album wasn't as good as I'd hoped.

Orson Scott Card is very band-like in that he keeps trying to recapture that Ender's Game magic every time, with wildly varying levels of success. Ironically, the best followup, Speaker for the Dead, was also the least like the original novel.

Ha yeah not the FOOs best.

Minutes to midnight was a huge letdown I thought. To many soft songs, and the heavier stuff sounded generic(given up, no more sorrow)

I want my happy anger of Hybrid theory and meteora, something to get off work stick in the cd player and unwind on the drive home.

Well, Motion City Soundtrack released a great first and secon album, but I found their third album to be somewhat different. Not bad necessarily, but not what I expected.
