If you think those characters are "dark" and "troubled", you must not be aware of much fiction. LeLouche and Samara don't have any depth or real darkness to them (L is an incredibly basic character, especially for anime, samara is just "herp derp im a ghost!"), and batman, well, is pretty silly when you get right down to it. Though he is easily the strongest case on your list.

I think someones already mentioned Monster...
Griffith from BERSERK.
Alex from A Clockwork Orange
gah too much wonderful stuff to think of!

The Governor for The Walking Dead.
I think several times I screamed "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU, MAN???" at the telly.

Obligatory The Joker answer too.

If I watched more anime, I'd probably have a stream of answers.

A lot of characters in the Battle Royale manga. None of the student characters are evil even the ones that seem truly evil are just broken or damaged in some way. The bad things they end up doing are down to faults developed from their past or the stress and paranoia getting to them by playing in the program.

If I had to pick one I'd go with Mitsuko Souma with Kazuo Kiriyama a close second (Mostly cause I hated him for killing a lot of the main students by the time it got to explain why he is the way he is). The scenes with Mitsuko regressing into her child mind state because her abuse as a child I found really good but disturbing to read especially since it visualises it by showing her as a doll from her childhood.

I would say Guts from Berserk is likely one of the most interesting characters I have ever read about easily without a doubt.

He was born in the mid-evil ages from the corpse of his mother who was hung by her intestines and nails from a tree along with the rest of her kin crying in a puddle of all their blood by a band of mercenaries. Despite being a bad omen the leader of the bands wife takes him as her son only to die of a horrible deforming disease a few years later (he was about 6 or 7) which only furthered the distaste for him among the band especially his already distant father who blamed him for the murder of his wife (Guts mother). Guts was quickly forced to earn his keep participating in full on wars even as a young child. A while later his father secretly sold him for a night to a fellow mercenary who raped him which would scar him for the remainder of his life. He never sleeps without his sword in his arms from that moment forward often hugging it in some attempt of affection. Then a few years later Guts father loses his leg in a accident and it becomes Guts job to support the two of them. One night in a drunken fit his father lashes out at Guts revealing that he had in fact sold him to be raped blaming him for his mothers death guts tries to defend himself and accidentally kills his father slicing him through the neck. Immediately after members of the band find out what happened and attempt to kills guts chasing him out of camp and off a cliff. Guts barely survives the fall and manages to limp on forward only to be attacked by a pack of wolves with nothing but him and his sword. He manages to fight of the wolves but only within a inch of his life.

Skip ahead a few years he is about 18 at this point all he knows is war and he works as a mercenary moving from war to war avoiding everyone and everything. Eventually he meets a band of mercenaries who ambush him. He overwhelms them and their leader takes notice and challenges him to a dual for his freedom. He loses his freedom but finds home. It takes him a whiles but he finally starts to open up to them. He makes friends and their group works their way up the ranks all the way to knighthood and then to the rank of noble and even to the countries top army he becomes second in command and even gets a girlfriend. After all this he finds out that his best friend (the leader of the army) doesn't respect him because he is to much off a follower. So in a attempt to carve his own destiny he leaves only to find out in his absence his best friend was arrested and tortured for 2 years. He manages to rescue his friend only to find out he can never walk talk or really even move ever again.

This is where things get a little crazy.

From here he is running away with the remnants of the army after the rescue of his friend, only to have his friend in all his depression summon the demon lords and sacrifice everyone Guts has
ever known or loved to being eaten by gruesome monsters in order become a demon lord himself. After his friend becomes a demon lord he proceeds to rape Guts girlfriend in front of him while Guts arm gets eaten off his body by demons and his eye gets pieced close with this being his final sight (at least in that eye). Guts manages to escape all this with his girlfriend but just barely with his girlfriend now having lost her mind and him missing his arm and a eye and that is the first half of the series not even the whole damn thing.

I have never seen a character go through more than guts the man is insanely complex and interesting and the story is soooooooooooooooooo well written you really empathize with all the characters and the situations. The lore is deep and complex all the while being interesting to under stand while still having more to learn with each re-read.
Spoileeeeeerssss! You really should hide some of that but yea totally agree, guts is a pretty cool character. A friend of mine got me to watch the anime and then later he had me read the manga (both are pretty good I think). Not sure if you know but his armor is available in Dragon's Dogma. I'm pretty close to the end of the game and still using it. :)

One thing I don't get though. In the manga, when he escapes as a boy, he's chased and injured, falling off a cliff. It's cold out too I think but it kind of looks like his hand is glowing in a puddle of water. Did he have some kind of divine intervention or is he just that tough, to get up and walk away and still be able to fight the wolves?

Not quite. His arm is bitten and held in place to keep him from moving, but it's Guts himself that chops it off to get lose. Better yet, he does it with his broken and blunt sword.

Phil Spector, he produced the Beetles, the sex pistols and even Pink Floyd I think and yet blew off his girlfriends head. He is still serving his life sentence but what talent he has.

don't forget the comedian: also kind of nuts (in a different way), but still understandable.

I've got to go with the Joker, specifically from Batman: Under the Red Hood or The Dark Knight. He's just so brutal, for no particular purpose. Which is of course why I love him.

Well, Dilandau from Vision of Escaflowne was pretty screwed up, and the reason they gave for it was pretty good imo.

Also, I think Bender from Futurama counts. An alcoholic, kleptomanic, manipulative, sadistic, unsympathetic and sociopathic robot who wants to kill the whole human race. Yeah, he counts.

Dean Winchester: lost both his parents, never went properly to school, the girl he almost could call his girlfriend blew herself up, was almost killed by his own possessed brother, was supposed to be used as a weapon to fight Satan. And not even mentioning him being sexist, selfish and shallow and all the crazy shit he's seen throughout the whole series. He's pretty messed up.

Rorschach has already beeen mentioned, but hell, he still deserves to be on this list. The scariest thing about him is how much we actually root for him and how convincing his uncompromising philosophy can be, despite being a murderous vigilante sociopath.

SHODAN from System Shock. Just look up some voice clips on youtube, you'll understand. She's up there with GladOs as one of the craziest sci-fi AIs.

Definitely V from V for Vendetta. Both in the comic and the movie he's just so charismatic and enthralling. Hugo Weaving gives a brilliant performance as him without ever showing his face.

I am torn between Anemone from Eureka 7 or Crona from Soul Eater.

Anemone was like an artifical version of Eureka and had a sadist behivour at the start and had to take her drug via neck injection. What made first was that she was like the suvivor from this "facility" where she's from (that facility alone give me the chill as that facility scene gave me great distress).

Crona own blood is his/ her weapon so it must of been tortue from him/ her. Crona had an odd relationship with his/ her mother Medusa like she wanted Crona to slay a baby dragon but Crona couldn't do it. Medusa locked Crona in a room with no light and the next day Crona was able to slay that baby dragon without a problem but with a creepy smile on Crona face. Also I still have no bloody idea if Crona is a boy or a girl! (I assume Crona is a girl since that flashback scene Crona had a dress but my mate think Crona is a boy).

Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion. First of all they're two kids with serious mental issues, and I mean serious.

Shinji simply can't believe in himself, is afraid of relating with other people, has almost no courage in himself so every time he has to do something important or dangerous he becomes afraid of the bad things that can happen and when something bad does happen he always runs away from his responsibility and puts the blame on others. On top of all that, Shinji simply doesn't know his reason to live, he doesn't know what his purpose is or what he wants to do.

Asuka is just insane, she is extremely egocentric and proud of herself, so all the time she's trying to prove to the others how better she is than everyone, she always mocks other people, gets angry about almost anything, is always complaining, putting blame on others when something goes wrong and when someone IS better than her she gets insane, giving away all logic and reason to try to show that she is better than said person. But the most disturbing thing about her is that she can't accept her own feelings, possibly because of her pride. She denies the love she's developing for a character and acts very aggressive towards him, while also saying she has a crush for another guy, that's far "better" than the one she actually loves.

Another thing that's cool is that these two aren't fucked up simply because they are, they have pasts that justify their personalities.

Shinji's mother died when he was very young and his father, Gendo, couldn't take care of him by himself. He had no contact with his father and when he had, his father was always very harsh and cold about him.

Asuka's parents committed suicide and she lived for the rest of her life in a military base training to be an Evangelion pilot.

I loved Ladd Russo from Baccano! In a series that focuses on immortals in the early 20th century, it says something when the most interesting character is a mortal man who is just batshit insane. He's part of a mob family, hijacks a train, kills multiple people (one guy had his head smashed into pulp just by his fists), and even has a twisted view of love. He constantly promises his girlfriend that he will kill everyone else in the world before he gets to her, then he will kill her slowly, but until the day comes then she must stay alive and by his side.

Yeah, pretty fucked up, but hot damn is he fun to watch.

Yeah, Ladd was cool.
Think I prefered Vino though.

My experience has been with the anime and its OVA about him, so I'll explain his backstory with that.

A criminal thug in Tokyo prior to the earthquake that destroyed the city and infected a small number of people with branch of sin, he was one of those who developed abilities. His blood ability was the ability to form his blood into blades. Two years after the earthquake, he is a cop, using his branch of sin instead of police issue weapons, he has a pair of serrated rings to slice open his forearms. He is the informal protector of an orphanage run by a young woman, and when he saves one of the boys from two muggers, he attracts the attention of another, more experienced, Deadman (branch of sin user) with the ability to cast his blood like spider's webs, and choke or tear people apart. He asks Senji to join him as the second in command of his army of gun toting thugs in their quest to form a new world order, but Senji declines, due to his life as a cop. The next day, seeing smoke, he runs to the orphanage to find all the children and the woman who cared for them have been brutally murdered. Demanding an explanation from the other Deadman, he is told it was done to free him of his responsibility, and so now he is free to help them reshape the world.

Senji launches an attack on their group, and is reinforced by his friends from the police force, which is successful. A few years later, during the anime proper, he is seen in the Deadman Wonderland prison, G block with the other Deadmen and is the first one encountered by the protagonist, Ganta, who is able to shoot his blood like bullets. Senji now has a tattoo above his eye, the initials of the members of his old police squad, who it is implied he killed (possibly by accident) between the OVA and anime. It's probably this that got him put on death row. He expresses a lust for violence, and loves challenging combat, and is widely considered one of the most proficient Branch users in the facility, described as 'an old hand at Hemoglobin Homicide'. When offered the opportunity to lead an escape from the facility, he declines, stating that the world is run by survival of the fittest, and that at least in the Wonderland, it was straight forward.

He's Ganta's first opponent in the 'Carnival Corps', a match to incapacitation or death between Deadmen and is thrilled to fight, to the point where when a doctor tried to postpone it due to Senji having broken ribs and a cracked sternum from a previous altercation, he nearly killed her.

'As soon as that buzzer goes off... I'm gonna fuck you up, man. Little kid, or not!', Senji.

Cliche contribution in 3...2...1...

Cloud Strife.

You play through most of the game as a cool, detached mercenary, who periodically has some surprising mental episodes; 'flashes' of memory, subject to mind control (if I recall correctly, I think he tackles and batters Aeris at one point). The whole 'copy of sephiroth' deal was pretty weak, but to find out that he was just a grunt who ended up in an opportunity to pretty much take over Zack's (the real SOLDIER) life was enamoring to me, way back when, especially Cloud's dedication to that facade. I found it to be the kind of fucked up that any normal person could be.

Fuminori from Saya no Uta.

After a car accident, Fuminori ends up in hospital with a very rare brain condition. Our 'hero' sees the world like this:

...and he sees his friends like this:

Needless to say, this drives him a few miles beyond insanity.

So yeah, I suppose that 'Fucked up' is an accurate way to describe him.

Albedo from the Xenosaga games.

I don't think I've ever seen a character arc more beautifully written. From his start in the first game (*Shudder* that scene with MOMO) to finding out his story in Ep. II, and then wrapping it all up in Episode III. Holy shit. I went from HATING him to his being my favorite character.

I second that. Rorschach was a great character.

Now to ruin him for you!

I quite like Teryn Loghain from Dragon Age: Origins. I like the idea of a great leader/freedom fighter doomed by his paranoia to become as bad or worse than what he's paranoid of.

Are those Mage characters in the rulebook stories? If so I have to go read it right now! Only skimmend over some basic mage mechanis and lore so I could use them in my chronicle as NPCs.
And since you seem to know some stuff about them, are WoD mages long lived or do they have normal life-span? Couldn't find it in the book.

OT:
As for my contribution to the thread, well, most of my favorites were already mentioned. Johan from Monster, just about anyone from Berserk (namely Gutts, Griffith and the most adventureous tofu known to man - Casca).

To continue in anime characters: Lucy from Elfen Lied
Ostrachised as a child due to being of the new breed, percived betrayel by her only friend and spent her teens locked in a lab. Proceedes to murder just about everyone on her escape, gets shot in the head and then the story stars.

Moving away from Japan, baron Valdimir Harkonnen from The Dune (by Frank Herbert) is one fucked up royal. Morbidly obesse (moves thanks to levitating pants), favorite music is industrial cacophony and hobbies include raping, murdering then raping again of little boys. How he managed to have two sons would be a mystery, were it not for the fact that when raping someone, gender doesn't seem to matter to him. His sons are also messed up in their own right, maybe because their "nanny" was a genius sociopath and assassin in barons employ.
