What was actually 1st? Cause Starcraft was released in 1998 dunno about 40k though.
1987.

And to point out the tyranid/zerg comparison with pictures...

Alien- Movie made in 1979
We've all seen these guys, though most would remember them from the Alien vs Predator movies, and not the awesome Alien movies they were first seen in.

This is about the hundredth time this has been brought up in here (An exaggeration).

Xenomorphs are only similar due to appearance. Tyranids/Zergs are similar in appearance (After 2001, as I was corrected earlier), AND in basic background structure.

I think the real problem is that we've somehow got it in our heads that if something is even remotely similar to something else, it's a rip off. This method of thinking is WRONG!!
I don't know how this got started, but if it was Yahtzee I'm going to fly down to Australia right now and beat him senseless with a 2x4!
...Yahtzee? ...really?

Other than that I agree with you, just because a film or whatever has a lot of similar elements doesn't necessarily mean it's a "rip off". There is a point where "inspired/influenced by" becomes "ripped off" and I suppose where that point is is different for different people but I do think fans of the thing that came first are going to skew heavily towards "rip off" rather than "inspire".
I was merely referring to how people around here seem to hang on Yahtzee's every word like he's the fucking Pope or something and latch onto what he says like sheep. Although I suppose beating him with a 2x4 wouldn't do any good, I should beat everyone else with a 2x4 instead. ¬__¬

Sure it was released in 1989 but if you can find me an earlier example of Mechs in Science Fiction than 1959 (military mech) I'll be damned. Yes I am aware of WotW

I guess rip-off isn't the right word.

I could go on and on but I'd rather know your thoughts on the matter of not just how crappy the Inheritance books are but also what other things have you seen or read that was an obvious rip off of another, better book/movie/anything else you can think of.
Two things: The Inheritance Trilogy was written by a 15 year old boy.
Secondly, read Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) before you accuse Eragon of ripping off Star Wars. :)

It's like accusing McDonalds of ripping off Burger King by selling burgers.

1987.
And that's way after Warhammer Fantasy Battle(83) vs. Warcraft(94).

Yeah, Blizzard's main money spinners are blatant rip-offs of Games Workshop, which were themselves ripped from Dungeons and Dragons, which were taken from Jack Vance, Tolkein and others.

I realize that the books were written by a 15 year old, but that isn't really an excuse. Its very unoriginal and, in my opinion, poorly written, I don't think it should have gone to print in the first place so it doesn't matter how old he was.
I did in fact know about the commonalities between Star Wars and Campbell's book but my point still remains that Eragon is almost the exact same thing as Star Wars, just with dragons they have colored swords for fucks sake.

True Crime was one helluva GTA rip-off. That is, until it suddenly became involved with all kinds of supernatural mumbojumbo. It was still pretty entertaining though.
Not that much of a rip-off: it was clearly inspired, but free-roaming games aren't exactly original or niche. The gameplay was pretty different, because it focused on "cool stuff" and martial arts rather than causing chaos.

What was with all the supernatural stuff anyway? It just randomly started in one of the storylines, and didn't make any sense.

I'm a believer in the idea that almost nothing created while sane, sober, and alive is entirely your own, and that you just take a bunch of influences through your day and combine them to make a new idea. That said, I still don't feel like stuff like Transmorphers or Eragon have enough creativity or ingenuity in them to call originals, and I feel that they could get sued for intellectual property theft if hit with a heavy enough lawyer.

Not read the books, but managed to watch the entire Eragon movie.

It's fascinating, though, it means the story must be so unimportant. Star Wars is a classical, Eragon is appalling rubbish, but they are exactly the same...scene for scene often.
No. Read the book. Right now. The Eragon movie is a pile of shit compared to the book. They didn't even try to go for accuracy. Don't form an opinion of the book series because of the movie.

Really? Blizzard, come on.
Do people not know this? Really? Blizz were developing a Warhammer 40k game but the deal fell through so they took the art they had already worked on, tweaked it alittle and used in their new RTS and the rest is history.

Anyway one time I worked on this investigation into a dodgy repair man who used to rip off old ladies by claiming their roof was damaged and he could repair it. He would then climb up into their roof cavity and just drive nails into a piece of wood for a couple of hours and charge them about a 1000 dollars for "repairs". What a shit of a man.

Proof please. No one else can provide it, despite my repeated request for it.

We all know War craft was supposed to be Warhammer, but there is no proof that Starcraft was W40K.

Do you have any troll themed proof?
Well, I mean, look at the trees. And the ground. It's as if it were the same place.

As does the Dungeons and Dragons film, and quite a few others [http://www.toplessrobot.com/2008/08/the_10_most_blatant_star_wars_ripoffs.php].
I'd actually say that Eragon rips off LotR more, but Paolini draws a distinction between plagiarism and ripping off [http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2004/jan/25/booksforchildrenandteenagers.features].

But then, put Gandalf, Obi Wan Kenobi and Dumbledore together and try and tell them apart.
