Simple AI can be great in games and advanced AI can make for a terrible game. It depends on things like level design, for a start.

The AI in Left 4 Dead is great, but I don't know how many times on single player I find myself yelling at the screen, "Goddammit, Francis. Get away from that witch!"

Oblivion, Fallout improved on this though so I'll forgive it.
I found Far Cry 2's AI infuritating at times. Typical scenario being one of your 'Buddies' running headlong in to battle to get his/herself shot to death whilst I wade in to clean up the mess AND save them from doom!

The suicidal allied generals in Rome: Total War are richly deserving of mention here.

Far Cry and MGS 4, presumably the guards in both games were taught at the same cruddy polytechnic of evil.

Mercenaries 2. I called in for some reinforcements on top of a building, thinking they would snipe them.

They all jumped off the building, conveniently, on the chopper I was flying at the time (Totally weird physics for bodies and blades).

You're all complaining about Gears of War, Halo and Call of Duty: WAW. You ain't seen nothing until you witness the atrocity that is the dumbass AI in Soldier of Fortune: Payback. They run towards grenades, continually walk into walls/cars/crates and would rather run towards you from 20 metres away to rifle-butt you than use their AK. It was actually hilarious for the first 10 minutes. Then I just wanted to kill the AI programmers.

For me this would have to go to the otherwise excellent Gears of War 2 in both campain and multiplayer. First off in campain as Yahtzee already mentioned the friendly AI has a frustrating habit to leave you to die. And in multiplayer death matches when you are the only human player and the rest are bots (don't have live at the moment) there is nothing worse than dying and having to watch your AI team struggle to fight while unable to even figure out where the enemy are.
What is the dumbest AI you ever encountered and how did it effect you as a gamer?
Have you played Gears 2 on insane yet? you will curse Dom to hell many times for always dying and ruining all your hard work.

I'm very scared about Sheeva...

I have to say Force Unleashed for the simple reasoning that the Euphoria engine might be great for bio-mechanical AI, and DMM makes stuff break good.

But when you can run around stormtroopers who just look at you with puzzlement whilst touting off a new improved type of AI, the irony is too much a winfail

Assassin's Creed, now throw your answers out the window since anything but Assassin's Creed (or Mercs 2) is totally wrong.

Friendly ai seems to be very tough to pull off, Gears 2's friendlys are pretty moronic but I think Halo 3's marines take the cake, they've run me over on several occasions and trying to operate the turret of a warthog while they drive is a one way ticket to an early grave.
Yeah, the Marines in Halo 2/3 and the Gears in both GoW games are horrendously thick.

The AI in L4D is excellent at pathfinding, but the AI teammates pick really terrible times to heal you and take way too long to help you up. Bill stood there watching a hunter pull my lungs out for a good 10 seconds, RIGHT in front of me, and I died.

I thought the marines in Halo: CE were worse than those in Halo 3. At least in Halo 3 you can be the gunner and the driver AI will do okay. In CE they usually just drove into a wall or wedged themselves into some rocks and then sat there doing nothing.

I've only played L4D a little so I wouldn't know, but I can imagine how frustrating bad ai would be in a game that relies so heavily on team work.

I would also consider Big Rigs, except I honestly don't think that counts as a game.

The worst AI I've seen is from Halo 1 and 2 - quit driving me off cliffs.

It usually isn't a problem, it's just that sometimes an AI player will become torn between which tasks to attend to first. Another teammate had a hunter on him behind Bill, so maybe he was trying to decide which one of us to save.

I have to agree Assassin?s creed guards are so silly

i just slaughtered a legion of troops and stabbed several onlookers in the neck

get chased, sit on a bench for a quick breather

5 seconds pass you can push the guards who were chasing you and who personally saw you rip up their comrades and they won't suspect your an Assassin at all

also

SW battlefront troops are pritty thick

"i'm gonna stand in front of and attack this AT-AT with my laser pistol"

bloody rebels

You're kidding, right? Every time I let the marines drive in either of the sequels I die within 90 seconds of mounting up.

They were better in Halo 1 because they would only take gunner/passenger and I'm a good 'hog driver. Plus, if you got a marine with a sniper rifle in the passenger seat he'd be headshotting everything at 50 MPH. I've seen sniper marines shoot HUNTERS in the one-shot spot on their back with the sniper rifle, FROM the seat of a Warthog in Halo 1. Never in any of the other games.
