im just letting you know that..... some of the things you said werent true. But, since im hanging from a thread with the mods, i wont. Good day.emeraldrafael said:Of course he did. That was a war he wasnt going to win if he said it wasnt. The Reason Cash's sounds so much better is Cash decided to take it on himself to dictate the flow of the song and add his twang. He was trying to pay off old debts and fines after his run in with drugs.TU4AR said:Uh, right, except Reznor himself said that Cash had turned it into his own song since the cover was so good and, in my opinion, so much more profound.emeraldrafael said:Hurt was already posted, though you should at least <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF4JaSBu1cI>credit the original band with it, not the cover artist.

Thats my pick. I broke down earlier today when that played, though thats more for personal reasons.
So no, I don't think you should credit the original artist over the cover artist. In fact, I'd say very often a cover can vastly exceed the original.
Besides that, Cash changed the lyrics itself and its the part that everyone loves to quote. He made it a reference to Christ by changing Crown of Shit to Crown of Thorns. That automatically adds the heavy feel, and draws all the people that flip thier shit over that stuff behind it, where on the other hand, you have Trent Reznor, who looks like Marylin Manson half the time, and is part of the rock group scene that A7F likes to populate.
There was no way that was going to be more profound then some old broken down old drug addict with a huge fan base singing with the allude to Christ and A music video that made the song about Johnny Cash himself. Thats why everyone thinks his cover is so much better, because with that vid, it made the song look like it was for Cash, when really Cash just saw a great chance to earn a shit load more money he needed to pay off debts.
Besides, thats all my opinion about whether a cover whether should be used or the original. I'd rather not get crucified just because I dont have this love fetish that everyone else does for the song. its a good song, but I just think the Original Carries so much more then what Cash is going to bring.
If I'm wrong, you should let me know about what, so that when other people read that, then read your post they;ll know some of what I said was wrong and what is and what isnt.jaketheripper said:SNip
I don't know, Adagio itself isn't necessarily depressing. At least not to me. I'd categorize more as bittersweet maybe? Eh, or maybe melancholy in the quiet pensive way, rather than the depressing sense. Regardless, it is beautiful.Caliostro said:What? A "Depressing song" thread and the most depressing song ever written has yet to be mentioned?
Is it even possible to think of something that's not depressing when this music is on?
very beautiful though. It's one of my favorite to play and perform.Sn1P3r M98 said:Yeah, this is what I came to post. Very sad song.Z of the Na said:
Thank you, I went through the entire thread to see if anyone had said that. Amazing it lasted as long as it did.VivaciousDeimos said:Anyway, I would agree with the OP, regarding the Johnny Cash version of Hurt, but I'll also add Cats In The Cradle. Since my dad died I can't listen to it anymore.
^this was the first song I thought of... and I don't find it inspiring at all. The lyrics don't ring true in my life, but they're generally true enough to fill me with loathing for a majority of humanity.Angus565 said:Way Down the Line by The Offspring is pretty depressing, but I find it oddly inspiring for some reason.
I actually thought when I started listening to Radiohead that most of their songs were depressing but they do have a large variety in their music. I recommend to keep looking because they're not as depressing as everybody thinks even if they do have a few depressing songs.Anchupom said:Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out) (Most Radiohead songs are depressing, I find this one more so.)
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
And even though the message of it isn't depressing, Wires by Athlete is pretty depressing to me.
Oh, and Bobby McFerrin - Don't worry, be happy
EDIT:
Bryan Adams - Sound The Bugle. Can't believe I forgot that one.
